About the Role 

We are delighted to share that we have an excellent opportunity for an Automation Engineer to join us within our Shieldhall Packaging Site. 

Shieldhall packages a huge volume of Scotch malt whiskies, white spirits, and ready-to-drink brands to supply over 170 countries around the world. As a key manufacturing site within the Scotch supply category, it plays a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of quality, efficiency, and safety in our operations. 

As our Automation and Controls PLC Engineer, you will play a vital role in enhancing line efficiency by reducing unplanned stoppages and optimising machine performance. You will lead continuous improvement initiatives, collaborating closely with maintenance and operations teams to ensure swift issue resolution and address recurring challenges through root cause analysis. 

In this role, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and optimising our site’s programmable logic controller (PLC) systems. Working closely with both production and maintenance teams, you will address technical issues, implement process enhancements, and contribute to the seamless operation of our automated systems, including project engineering work.  

Your responsibilities will include: 

Modify and update PLC programmes for both new and existing systems. 

Diagnose and resolve issues related to PLC hardware and software. 

Collaborate with production and engineering teams to implement system improvements. 

Perform routine maintenance and updates to PLC systems. 

Optimise PLC performance to enhance manufacturing efficiency and reliability. 

Lead the implementation of a Risk-Based Assessment programme for all PLC systems, covering both existing assets and future upgrades. 

Ensure compliance with organisational change processes for all modifications, upgrades, and project work related to PLC systems. 

Champion the maintenance management system, promoting best standard processes, procedures, and methodologies. 

Work closely with line electricians, providing coaching and support on PLC systems and functionality. 

Lead the resolution of complex technical issues as they arise. 

Continuously monitor and analyse line performance, identifying gaps, root causes, and opportunities for improvement. 

 

Health and safety compliance is key, and you will be at the forefront of making sure this is monitored alongside ensuring both site and personal KPI’s are achieved. 

 

Shifts 

 

As an Automation Engineer, you will work a 37.5hr week on a dayshift Monday – Thursday 07:00AM to 05:00PM. 

  

About You

Confident in challenging existing approaches, identifying new opportunities and driving positive change in manufacturing excellence. Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach will be key to your success. 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

Experience with Siemens S5/S7, TIA Portal, and Allen Bradley PLCs (essential). 

Strong knowledge of PLC hardware and software, including programming languages such as ladder logic. 

Familiarity with industrial control systems and automation standards. 

Expertise in PLC programming, ladder logic, SCADA, HMI design, and electrical circuit design. 

Understanding of automation systems and industrial networking. 

Can work well within a team as well as the ability to make effective decisions and thrive in situations where they can solve problems. 

Holds strong interpersonal and leadership skills with an ability to communicate with all levels across the site. 

Able to push forward your own ideas about improvements to current approaches and appraise new opportunities. With a strive to make a positive difference to manufacturing excellence and show your excellent communication skills.
