AUTOMATION TECHNICIAN

 

DESCRIPTION:

 

The Automation Technician provides leadership to direct and coordinate activities such as repairs, preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, alterations, improvements and protection of all company assets to ensure economical and continuous operations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Modify PLC Programs (develop and document changes) Maintain health and reliability of Control Net Network (PLC to PLC, PLC to field I/O network, cabling) Maintain health and reliability of Device Net Network Back up PLC programs on a scheduled basis (develop back up schedules, SLC500, Micrologix, PLC5, Control Logix) Coordinate maintenance of VFDs Add and maintain Field I/O as necessary. Maintain plant electrical drawings and documentation. Create procedures for all related tasks Review outstanding Work Orders and communicate a reasonable completion time. Rotate Plant Call Out Schedule as needed Perform other plant supporting functions as deemed necessary by Maintenance Manager. Back up all PLC and HMI programs on a scheduled basis Modify PLC programs and equipment at the direction of the Automation and Continuous Improvement Engineer Help maintain documentation related to program changes Provide high level support to the maintenance department Maintain and troubleshoot the Production Computer Network Help maintain and update the plant electrical drawings Help maintain and modify the Plant Data Acquisition System Assist plant management with machine optimization projects Assist in the training of EMT’s in certain electrical concepts Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical and electronic equipment, components, and systems for the production line equipment, manufacturing plant, machinery, and other equipment, such as pumps, motors, tools, conveyor systems, boiler house systems, compressors, cooling water system, production machines, video equipment, computers, printers, heating and air conditioning systems, frequency drive controllers, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), transformers,  starters, medium and high voltage drives, switchgears, limit switches, sensors, instrumentation, transmitters, alarms, grounding, data interface hardware and software,  and more. Uses hoists, hand tools, gauges, tapes, drills, testing devices, personnel lifts, forklifts, etc., to perform repairs and/or install equipment. Observes and listens to operating machines or equipment to plant and facility operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and determine need for adjustment and/or repair. Studies blueprints, schematics, sketches, and machine specifications to determine type and dimensions of electrical parts stock required and diagnose and repair of equipment problems. Dismantles machine or equipment to examine parts for defects.  Repairs or replaces defective parts with new or repaired parts.  Assembles and tests electrical operation to verify correction of malfunction.  Performs scheduled maintenance and updates electrical systems on machinery, equipment, and building.   Installs limit switches, sensors, instrumentation, transmitters, rewiring, drives and loop controllers, cables, wires, etc. Assists in scheduled plant maintenance and cleaning of electrical and/or electronic equipment during shutdown periods. QUALIFICATIONS:

Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience as an Automation Technician preferred. Requires 3 or more years of experience in plant maintenance or equivalent experience in a related field.

 

 

COMPETENCIES:

Need to have basic lubrication skills. Must possess an understanding of all electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Computer literate Strong communication and interpersonal skills, listening skills, data analysis and interpretation. Ability to plan, schedule, and clearly communicate thoughts and work instructions. Ability to set priorities based on company goals and manage multiple ongoing tasks on a daily basis. Position requires individual to climb multiple flights of stairs and ladders daily as well as ability to work in tight quarters. Must be able to wear air respirator equipment. Must be tolerant of grease, oil, and other petroleum- based products.
