This is where YOU fit in: As anAutomotive Technician, you will provide a full range of maintenance and repair work to major components and assemblies of a variety of vehicles and materials to support to the local Naval Community…no two days will look the same.

So, what might a “typical” day look like?
oDetermine exact nature and extent of repairs required. Uses a wide variety of test equipment such as test panels, dynamometers, oscilloscopes, and exhaust analyzers in addition to visual and auditory checks to locate defects.
oPerform the full range of maintenance, overhaul and repair work of major components and assemblies such as engines, transmissions, and differentials of automobiles. Gasoline and/or diesel powered trucks, buses and materials handling equipment like forklifts.
oMajor and minor overhaul and repair of steering, braking systems, related electrical, fuel, hydraulic, wheel and engine assemblies.
The Qualifiers:
oMust possess current and valid ASE Certification(s).
oOne year of experience that provided or required knowledge and ability to perform automotive repair and maintenance services on automobiles trucks vans or forklifts etc.
oMay substitute 2 years of automotive technical study for one year of experience.
oPhysical requirements and working conditions: Required to stand stoop bend stretch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions where components worked on are in hard to reach places. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds occasionally may lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
oMust receive Hazardous Material (HazMat) training within 90 days of hire per Department of Transportation regulations.
oMust pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

Job Summary:
Makes repairs and services a variety of components accessories and parts on the many systems of automobiles trucks vans forklifts etc. Performs state safety inspections.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Examine vehicles to determine extent of maintenance and repairs required.- Make repairs that can be accomplished by cleaning, reinstalling or replacing defective parts or components of vehicle systems. Determine if parts should be cleaned and reinstalled or replaced. As necessary, remove and replace parts with parts of the same fit and fitness of original equipment
whether aftermarket or original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
- Make settings and adjustments of components to OEM specification.
- Use a variety of common hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, screw drivers, sockets and ratchets, impact tools, ignition tools and others.
- Perform prescribed tests/inspections, including test driving, using such specialized equipment as infrared engine analyzer, compression gauge and computerized diagnostics to insure vehicles meet manufacturers recommended specifications. Using state prescribed special testing and inspection
equipment, performs required state inspections and tests. Where deficiencies are noted, withholds sticker and informs vehicle owner of the need for deficiency corrections, quoting from the state manual, as necessary.
- Perform checklists as prescribed to ensure all components are examined, including belts, hoses, steering linkage, tires, brakes, fuel system, lights, wipers, glass, etc.
- Study and plan maintenance and repairs to OEM specification using professional management information systems (MIS), technical manuals, diagrams and experience.
- Test and adjust vehicle systems to meet OEM performance specifications.
- Maintain automotive equipment in good serviceable condition.
- Consult with Service Advisor(s) recommending comprehensive repairs and maintenance of customer vehicles.
- Exercise tact, good manners and courtesy when serving and assisting customers. This is expressed by tactfully responding to patron inquiries and assisting patrons in a prompt and friendly manner.
- Receive assignments from a supervisor, orally or in the form of repair orders. Select tools and determine methods of use, receiving advice and guidance on connection with unusual problems which may arise. Completed work is reviewed for acceptability and conformance with requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
ASE Certification(s) for assigned work responsibilities are required. XW-08 Technicians must possess 1- 4 of the following ASE Certifications:
A4 - Suspension Steering
A5 - Brakes
A6 - Electrical / Electronic Systems
A7 - Heating Air Conditioning
A8 - Engine Performance
Failure to maintain current ASE Certifications may result in a position downgrade or termination due to failure to meet job requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Normally works inside on concrete floors where it is drafty and noisy and where fumes from vehicles are present, and occasionally outside sometimes in bad weather. Is exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and is subject to cuts bruises, burns, shocks, and strains.
