The Advanced Transportation Operations Optimization Department (P222) in the Center for Integrated Transportation is seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic, and self-reliant candidates with a strong interest in aviation. The ideal candidate will have technical skills in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, data analytics, applied mathematics/statistics, software engineering, information systems, operations research, or similar areas and will join our department as an Aviation Systems Engineering Intern.

As an intern with the Advanced Transportation Operations Optimization team, you will collaborate with Air Traffic Control experts, analysts, and engineers to optimize and integrate airspace operations from concept development through implementation, and to safely and efficiently deliver operational improvements to diverse aerospace stakeholders. You will gain insights into sponsor missions and develop skills to drive problem-solving, innovation, informed decision-making, and operationalization of concepts. The selected candidate will support work involving Federal, State and Local governments, public and private operators, as well as international partners. You will learn and become equipped with technical skills and a strong domain knowledge.

Basic Qualifications

Must be a student enrolled full-time pursuing an accredited degree seeking program in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, data analytics, applied mathematics/statistics, software engineering, information systems, operations research, or related technical fieldMust continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internshipStrong innovation, problem-solving, systems analysis, planning, organizational, and interpersonal skillsExcellent written and verbal communications skills with ability to describe and present complex technical concepts in relatable termsSustained excellence in academic performance

Preferred Qualifications

Experience having applied systems engineering, aerospace engineering, data analytics, applied mathematics/statistics, software engineering, information systems, operations research, or similar learning to an internship or research/lab positionExperience with data and statistical analysis tools (e.g., Python, PERL, Java, R, MATLAB, Tableau, SQL, NoSQL, etc.)Experience in MS Office tools such as Excel, Project, Visio, PowerPoint, and WordProven ability to work independently to learn new systems and/or aerospace engineering technologies, techniques, processes, languages, and best practicesExperience with Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE)Experience in aviation/aerospaceDemonstrated interest in serving the public
