The Headlines:
The Barley Research Assistant (BRA) is responsible for supporting all breeding work associated with yield trials & seed production in ID, MT, WY, CO and Alberta. The BRA treats seed lots with seed treat, packages seed for trials, plant trials, maintains nurseries & harvests trials in the US. The BRA conducts post-harvest activities of weighing plot bags, cleaning seed, organizing all harvested trials, processing plot bags in the quality lab. The BRA rogues seed lots and organizes all plot bags for sub-sampling to allow for export.
This position reports to The Barley Development Scientist.
The Responsibilities:
Performs post-harvest activities to weigh plot bags, clean seed, conducts lab analysis to measure grain plumpness, grain test weight, grain moisture & protein. Weighs & organizes all plot bags by site & trial to maintain effective & quick access to all plots produced from the US & Alberta. Treating seed with seed treat. Marking fields for planting. Works as a crew member to plant & harvest yield trials & seed increases in ID, MT, WY and CO. Transports equipment to off-site locations as necessary during planting & harvest periods. Conducts weed control, tags plots, collects height notes & performs husbandry work to maintain yield nursery sites in ID, MT, WY & CO. Rogues seed lots (remove off type barley plants, weeds & other crop plants) to produce the highest quality seed possible. Assists with all activities associated with maintaining barley trials and seed lots in Idaho, Montana, Colorado and Wyoming Assists with all activities associated with organizing & sub-sampling seed for testing and exporting.
The Other Qualifications:
You have some college, and 1-3 years of experience. You will be organized, and willing to work outside traditional work hours as needed. Must be able to perform repetitive work standing in a lab setting for several months. You will be able to conduct work outside in inclement weather from March-August. You have some knowledge of small plot equipment, tractors, drills, combines, forklifts, pickup trailer in tow & seed cleaners or willing to learn. You love a challenge.
