Battery Storage Commissioning Engineer

The Battery Storage Commissioning Engineer is responsible for integrating components and controls to drive C&I energy storage system deployments. This role provides electrical and control system engineering expertise to battery energy storage systems (BESS) product deployment projects by interfacing with cross functional teams including Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing and Field Service.

Major Responsibilities

Develop and implement commissioning plans and procedures for battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to ensure alignment and timely completion of tasks.

Oversee the installation of battery storage systems, ensuring compliance with design specifications and safety standards.

Conduct pre-commissioning checks and inspections to verify system integrity and readiness.

Develop and execute system sequence of operations to enable energy system systems use cases such as demand response, on and off-grid reliability, renewable energy optimization, frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, distributed energy resource optimization, etc.

Perform initial power-up and configuration of BESS.

Conduct functional and performance tests to verify system operation according to design parameters.

Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during the commissioning process.

Define system test plans and reliability requirements

Maintain accurate records of commissioning activities, test results, and system performance data.

Prepare and submit detailed commissioning reports, including any deviations from design specifications and corrective actions taken.

Provide training and support to operations and maintenance personnel on the proper use and maintenance of the BESS.

Develop and deliver training materials and user manuals.

Identify and recommend improvements to commissioning processes and procedures.

Stay updated with industry developments and advancements in battery storage technology.

Translates technical information to varied audiences through written communication and presentation skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Hands on involvement with troubleshooting, testing, validating, and commissioning AC/DC electrical systems

Background with battery energy storage systems, microgrids, distributed energy resources, power conversion systems, low or medium voltage electrical distribution

Commissioning experience with C&I BESS applications

Maintain expert level of internal product knowledge on energy storage system and controls philosophy

Ability to apply product knowledge and technical skills to solve problems independently with minimum supervision

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline

5+ years of relevant work experience in battery energy storage deployment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following Energy Storage System technologies such as AC or DC coupled systems, batteries, battery management systems, power conversion systems such as inverters or converters, PV, fire suppression systems, thermal management systems and firmware

Advanced knowledge of control methods, energy management systems, and battery management systems

Ability to integrate system controls using Modbus (TCP/IP or RTU), CAN bus, or other communication protocols to varied PLC platforms

Familiarity with regulatory compliance such as: UL 1741, UL 9540 -A, NFPA 855, NFPA 70, DER interconnect standards, and generally with UL, NFPA, CSA, FCC, and IEC standards governing energy storage systems

Certified to NABCEP ESIP, NFPA 70E, OSHA30, Red Cross FA/CPR/AED

Compensation: Generac is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role when based in Denver, Colorado is $128,000 to $150,000. This compensation will ultimately be in line with the location in which the position is filled. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. This role is eligible for variable compensation including short- and long-term incentives.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk.  On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 - 50 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
