The Behavior Specialist Assistant is responsible for implementing the Behavior Support Plan of Individuals with unique behavioral and/or mental health challenges. The Behavior Specialist Assistant is also responsible for monitoring, and collecting behavior data for the Behavior Specialist to analyze while providing direct support to individuals supported. The Behavior Specialist Assistant is responsible for providing therapeutic based skills training in functional life skills, vocational, self-direction, community utilization, socialization, and communication to individuals supported. The Behavior Specialist Assistant will offer opportunities for choice, initiation, and risk taking while capitalizing on each person’s capabilities, strengths and preferences. They provide transportation and accompany individuals on community outings and volunteering assignments using personal agency vehicles. Additionally, they provide assistance with personal care and required to also promote independence. The position works with a multidisciplinary team following all support plans and is responsible for accurate documentation.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

 

Provide Assistance to the Behavior Specialist and Clinical Director in the development of teaching procedures for the implementation of each of the goals and objectives in the Individual Support Plan and Behavior support plan.

The collection of data for each goal and objective frequency as defined in the teaching plans and programs.

The submission of all data sheets to the Behavior Specialist or Clinical Director as directed.

Completion of progress reports as noted in Individual Support Plan.

Assisting the Behavior Specialist in the analysis of data collected and development of graphic data presentations to determine teaching program effectiveness.

Participation in team meetings for all individuals assigned on caseload as needed.

Facilitate and monitor Crisis Intervention and Prevention responses when indicated.

Communicate any educational, behavioral or family concerns to immediate supervisor in a timely manner.

Responsible for the overall physical, psychological and emotional health and safety of the participant.

Models healthy behavior and positive social skills.

Provides supports as written in the individual’s support plan that may include personal care, physical lifting and therapeutic holds.
Assists with an individual’s environment such as cleaning, laundry, shopping, cooking, errands and budgeting.

Facilitates and maintains family contacts and community involvement.

Encourages the development of new relationships and contacts by assisting people to be active in their communities and workplace.

Monitors the dietary needs of the program participant.

Communicates effectively in verbal and written format. Communication is to be given and received and is every employee’s responsibility.

Actively participates in improving communication with participants by learning, encouraging and actively utilizing an individual’s modes of communication.

When applicable, follows doctors’ orders and ensures that medications and treatments are administered following proper medical procedures.

Recognizes, reports and assists with medical crises as they occur.

 

Additional Responsibilities 

 

May assist in the vocational evaluation process.

May support vocational programming including payroll for hours worked, merit ratings, referrals and job coaching.

Performs work in compliance with Human Rights regulations.

May work independently of direct supervision or, at times, alone.

Maintains confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.

Maintains and takes responsibility for certifications and all trainings as required, respectful of management leadership at all times.

Contributes to the positive morale by representing the agency through professional communication and interactions.

Implements and fosters the principles of self-advocacy which promote an independent lifestyle and respect for program participants.

Assists people with learning about and advocating for their personal rights and understanding the responsibilities that accompany those rights.
Follows all established policies and procedures and documents accordingly.

Communicates effectively with a variety of community agencies, businesses and members, verbally or in writing.

Adheres to all Human Rights policies and procedures, completes incident reports as needed, and provides the least restrictive environment, while adhering to each participant’s level of supervision.

Contributes to the positive morale by representing the agency through professional communication and interactions.

Arrives punctually and participates in all required meetings, in-services and trainings. Maintains certifications as required.

Responds effectively to potential safety hazards and emergencies. Maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment by being respectful of property and equipment. Follows proper maintenance instructions.

May be required to provide support through physical lifting and/or therapeutic holds.

Able to work with minimal supervision.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical demands: Sitting, pushing, pulling, carrying, grasping, speaking, listening, stooping, crouching, bending, standing, twisting, crawling, walking, climbing. Requires a normal degree of flexibility; ability to walk, run or shuffle, kneel on one or two knees and then stand up; to utilize upper and lower body strength within weight restrictions; May be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds or more with assistance.

Work environment: Use of workplace chemicals, residential and community settings, outside work, atmospheric and injury exposures. Driving to various locations.

Qualifications

 

  Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Education or related field preferred 4 years of experience in a related field can be substituted for education. Experience working with individuals with behavioral challenges preferred.
