Behavioral Health Community Health Worker Apprentice
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OCMH is launching a pilot Behavioral Health Community Health Worker (BH-CHW) apprenticeship in early 2025. Developed in collaboration with CUNY, Hostos Community College, the Healthcare Career Advancement Program, and nonprofit health and human service organizations, this will be the first nationally recognized apprenticeship of its kind. Apprentices will complete paid work hours and virtual coursework with Hostos, earning incentives for each class. Candidates with connections to the communities and populations being served, as well as prior PSW, human services, or community engagement work experience are encouraged to apply. RiseBoro Community Partnership’s Wellness Rising program is an ambitious initiative partially funded by DOHMH to promote Health and Wellness education and address health disparities in Brooklyn. The Behavioral Health Community Health Worker is responsible for providing education and guidance to the community members within the NYCHA Marcy Houses. The Behavioral Health CHW Apprentice will work directly with Marcy Houses residents through individual health coaching sessions, assist with health and wellness-related programs, and participate in outreach activities within the community. Specific duties and responsibilities include: + Assist in the preparation of presentations on a variety of health-related subjects + Facilitate in-person to individuals within Brooklyn community spaces i.e., libraries, community centers, Family Heath Centers, health fairs, etc. + Ensure all program participants complete surveys before scheduled events + Update all materials with new information provided by the CDC or NYDOHMH concerning health alerts + Maintain accurate daily logs, case notes, and files for all participants + Collect and enter client data into the referral database + Attend scheduled case review meetings, staff meetings, and assigned/required training + Other relevant duties as assigned COMPETENCIES + Highly Proficient in English/Spanish; ability to read, and write in English and Spanish preferred + Able to engage with college-level coursework (9th–10th grade minimum reading level) + Able to commit to a near-full-time schedule for 6-month apprenticeship including ~21hr/week with employer and ~9 hr/week in classroom + Able to multi-task and manage several tasks at once + Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality, particularly with client information + Ability to work independently and collaborate with a team + Familiarity with Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY area preferred EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or equivalent (HSE/GED) required Eligible apprentices must also demonstrate having 6 or more months of full-time relevant experience prior to beginning the apprenticeship. Eligible experience includes work with government agencies or community organizations that provide public services such as: + Programs aimed at assisting community members in accessing resources and supportive services. + Initiatives that maintain partnerships with schools, community organizations, or other government agencies to promote health and wellness programs.
