Bell Labs Research Scientist - Localization Fusion

The team you'll be part of

Strategy and Technology lays the path for Nokia’s future technology innovation and identifies the most promising areas for Nokia to create new value. We set the company’s strategy and technology vision, offer an unparalleled research foundation for innovation, and provide critical support infrastructure for Nokia.

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research group of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

Applied Analytics and Algorithms in Bell Labs Solutions Research use ML and analytical approaches for estimation and control, while developing system insights through data analytics.

The research areas in the team include, Audio and Video Analytics, Machine Learning (ML), Remote Control (RC), and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). The team conducts research around state estimation, localization, and system insight while also dealing with delayed networking techniques to optimize, automate, and enhance performance of connected devices.

Our international team is based primarily in Murray Hill - USA, Espoo - Finland, and Bangalore - India. Now we also expand in Budapest - Hungary.

Your skills and experience.

We are looking for a candidate that has a background in control theory and sensor fusion with the understanding of software technologies, who can design and build systems. Strong coding skills are a must.

The ideal candidate:

Enjoys researching and thrives when implementing early prototypes of new technologies in novel ways. Loves to code and can solve complex problems. Strong communication skills and the ability to successfully work in collaborative projects. Has worked with software development flows/tools, data engineering, etc.

You have:

PhD in Physics, Electrical engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field Experience with analytical and/or ML based mathematical model development Strong programming skills Experience with localization, positioning and spatial mapping Understand with RF technologies and propagation

It would be nice if you also had:

Experience in designing and realizing large and complex software systems. Experience with visualizing/presenting data. Experience with 5G positioning

What you will learn and contribute to

The team works with a mixture of analytical and learning based methods for system level performance enhancement. You will work as an independent research scientist that can contribute to, and drive research activities. The center of gravity is research around multi-modal localization and spatial mapping. Radio is one amongst other modalities for localization together with visual, audio, etc. The work includes, architecting, implementing, and building systems that can perform device localization at scale.

As a member of the team, you will:

Identify new and ambitious research challenges, define research projects to address these challenges, and carry out these projects to completion, Transfer research results into impactful software solutions through business units or through incubation, Publish research results in major scientific venues worldwide, including top conferences and journals, Collaborate with other researchers in Nokia Bell Labs and external partners, Generate intellectual property through the patenting of ideas.

Short term we are looking for someone in Budapest to support our 5G positioning activities and develop algorithms to enhance positioning performance using RF technologies.
