BIDMC Cytology Cytoprepatory Assistant; 40hrs/wk

Prepares and stains of slides from cytologic specimens obtained by a variety of cell sampling techniques, including needle aspiration biopsies, endoscopic washings and brushings, cervical/vaginal/anal cytologic samples, and from body cavity fluids.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities: 

1. Logs, stains, processes and coverslips all gyn and non- gyn slides using manual and automated cytological techniques (essential) 

2. Maintains all equipment and reports any problems to Ctylogy Lead Tech. Performs daily start-up maintenance and trouble shooting on instrumentation, reports concerns and problems to the supervisor according to laboratory policies. (essential) 

3. Maintains inventory of supplies and stock in lean supply chain assuring transport media and other client supplies are available. (essential) 

4. Assures all specimens are accurately lugged and registered as needed to meet expected daily turnaround time set by the laboratory (essential) 

5. Prepares for testing and disposes after testing of biological and chemical hazardous waste materials (biological and chemicals) using BIDMC's approved safety processes . (essential) 

6. Trains work study students, new cytology technicians and fellow/residents in the operation of the cytoprep area. (essential) 

7. Files cytology slides based standard practice to ensure easy retrieval for future reference (20 years). (essential) 

8. Answers telephone inquiries, and assists in problem resolution with the cytotechnologists and customers to assure patients needs are met. (essential) 

9. Prepares cell blocks on non-gyn samples and makes additional slides. (essential) 

Required Qualifications: 

High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree  in Medical or Health Related preferred. 0-1 years related work experience required. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access. Preferred Qualifications: Cytology lab work experience.

Team Work: Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services. 

Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner. 

Social/Environmental Requirements: 

1. Work requires periods of close attention to work with out interruption. Concentrated effort of up to 4 hours without break may be required. 

2. Work is fairly routine from day to day. Employee follows a set pattern with any changes being communicated by supervisor. 

3. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions 

Daily:  Exposure to dust,gas,fumes,steam,chemicals-Chemicals, Protective equipment required(Respirator,earplugs,mask,gloves,eyewear etc), Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or airborne pathogens, Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or bloodborne pathogens. 

4. Health Care Status:  IHCW: No patient contact, but regular handling of specimens for testing and diagnostics.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department
