The Role

Under general direction, the Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and casework services to individuals who have mental illnesses and/or substance abuse problems.  Assesses patient’s mental status through interviews and observations and then develops treatment plans or makes referrals to appropriate services.

 

What You Will Do

Works with patients and their families to determine goals for treatment.Solicits family information, observations and concerns.Interviews, observes and develops treatment plans for patients.Implements, goals, policies and activities designed to meet program objectivesConducts individual and group therapy sessions for patients with mental illness, emotional and substance abuse problems.May assess incoming clients and eventually help prepare them for transitioning home.Provides referrals to appropriate mental health resources.Monitors patient’s treatment progress and keeps track of their mental status.Consults with other mental health professionals to provided effective courses of treatment.Provides crisis intervention services to patients who are in danger to themselves and others.Keeps accurate records of patient records and treatment provided.Evaluates and utilizes community mental health resources as needed.

 

 

 

Who You Will Be

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling.At least 1-2 years demonstrated clinical experience in substance use and/or mental health treatment for designated programs based on needs of the facility.  In depth knowledge of NYC diverse network of medical and behavioral health care organizations, including substance use disorders, treatment services, education and employment services, and non-traditional community support groups. Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHR.Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.Ability to maintain confidentiality.

 

License/Certification Required:

To obtain QHP (Qualified Health Professional) status within designated OASAS regulated programs, MHC-Permit required and must obtain within 90 days of hire ORNYS LMHC licensure for designated programs/divisions.
