Perform basic laboratory animal procedures, including injections (subcutaneous, intramuscular, and tail vein) in rodents and blood collection. Assist in rodent surgeries, euthanasia, necropsies and collection of tissues. Clean and maintain surgical tools. Assist and train others within the lab. - Conduct laboratory experiments using established methods and procedures. Maintain lab safety and provide routine equipment maintenance. Use statistical models to analyze data and maintain databases. Participate in maintaining lab function by ordering supplies, implementing lab safety procedures, assisting with writing IACUC protocols, and assisting in maintaining fiscal records. Troubleshoot problems with procedures and update written procedures as needed. Facilitate daily operations. Maintenance of the laboratory includes: cleaning and properly allocating supplies, supply inventory, ordering supplies and equipment; updating reference research database in computer, arranging for the procurement of animals for experimental use; assisting in the management of monies allocated for research use, assuring that the best price is found and that purchased items are appropriately documented, and to research alternative products, acquiring samples, and assist with testing for efficacy. Communicate with vendors and support personnel. - Assist in monitoring the quality of a student’s work. Participate in compiling data and creating or using statistical models to analyze data. Perform various research procedures following specific protocols. These procedures will include but are not limited to preparation and calculation of concentration/dilution of solutions and pH analysis. Perform extraction of protein, DNA and RNA. Perform western blots, PCR, real-time PCR, immunocytochemistry and statistical data analysis. Tissue culture duties (including medium preparation, maintenance of cell cultures and assistance with in vitro experimentation). – Assist in sampling plans or coordinating the collection of samples, processing tissues for histologic procedures using histology techniques including fixation, embedding, staining and immunohistochemistry. Participate in histologic processing of mouse tissues including: fixation, embedding, sectioning with a precision microtome and staining thin sections. Perform immunohistochemical staining for a variety of proteins. Perform data collection with a computer-assisted image analysis system. Entering data in spread sheets and statistical analyses.
