Overview

The Biomedical Engineer works with life scientists, chemists, and medical professionals on the engineering aspects of biological systems. Adapt computer hardware or software for medical science or health care applications. Develop and evaluate quantitative models of biological processes and systems. Conduct research to test and modify known theories and develop new theories. Support research and engineering services for the medical application of telemedicine and autonomous devices, in particular regarding their application for unmanned and/or aerial systems. Work as part of a research team to coordinate system-wide device integration and explore innovative methods to provide remotely operated and/or autonomous capabilities for combat casualty care, operational medicine, and force health protection.

Responsibilities

Support research on approved projects, managing schedule, cost, and performance.  Design, plan, and build systems-level approaches to healthcare needs for military operational goals, especially in telemedicine and autonomous systems. Perform hardware and software integration to build proof-of-concept prototypes for novel medical, communications, and autonomous systems technology applications. Coordinate and conduct testing and evaluation of research prototypes in simulated tactical environments and during field exercises.  Provide programmatic and technical oversight and execution management assistance. This includes reviewing reports, plans, and prototypes.  Draft research proposals for battlefield systems incorporating medical devices, communications infrastructures, and autonomous systems. Provide briefings as required on assigned research projects. Report and publish research findings for assigned research projects. Provide written subject matter expertise and technical feedback on research proposals. Provide support to assist in developing estimates for the lab budget reviewing monthly reports and invoices and providing recommendations to the Government. Foster collaborative partnerships with industry, academia, and other Federal agencies and draft collaborative agreements.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields. 5-7 years of experience in managing research projects, including oversight of schedule, cost, and performance to ensure successful execution. Experience in hardware and software integration to develop proof-of-concept prototypes for medical, communications, and autonomous systems applications. Experience coordinating and executive research prototype testing and evaluation in simulated tactical and field environments. A background in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or biomedical engineering.

Basic Compensation: $117,000 - $127,000 yearly salary

The salary offered within this range will be based on the selected candidates’ skills, experience, education, market data, and internal parity. DLH may offer other rewards that may include performance incentives and program-specific awards.  An applicant’s salary history will not be used to determine compensation.
