This position is a highly-specialized technician responsible for providing functional expertise on complex specialized biomedical devices and systems within an assigned specialty area. This position executes professional level inventory assessments/audits and makes recommendations for specialty equipment purchases. The Biomedical Technician IV reviews preventative maintenance standards for improvements and makes recommendations for more effective scheduled maintenance activities. This position serves as a resource and provides assistance to other staff in areas concerning specialty, including providing training and instruction to others on specialty equipment. This role performs highly-skilled work on equipment of considerable difficulty and risk and is considered a technical expert in area of specialty. This position travels across multiple sites as required or as needed.

Responsibilities

Biomedical Specialty Area
* Repairs, installs, inspects and troubleshoots, and calibrates equipment in specialty area. Implements preventative maintenance and electrical safety inspections. Oversees the work of external contractors/vendors engaged in providing services for specialized equipment.

* Serves as a subject matter expert on applicable specialty equipment, including providing training and instruction to others on specialty equipment.

* Assists in the evaluation and selection of new equipment, accessories and supplies in area of specialty. Participates in developing detailed purchase specifications for new specialty equipment.

* Maintains documentation associated with specialty equipment.


 
Biomedical Equipment Responsibilities
* Provides customer service and resolves equipment service problems by ensuring that clinical capability is restored as quickly as possible. Maintains communications with customers regarding the status of equipment repairs.

* Proactively solves technology issues when appropriate.

* Coordinates/schedules service (self, vendor, and when appropriate, other technicians) via management of customer expectations.

* Performs device investigations related to regulations and/or incident reporting.

* Utilizes applicable automated hardware and software applications and diagnostic service software appropriate to the equipment being serviced.

* Documents all work performed, maintains parts, supplies, tools, test equipment and technical literature by completing service reports and supplemental productivity documentation in an accurate and timely manner.

* Assists manager in maintaining a comprehensive library of technical literature.

* This position has responsibility for equipment maintenance records on a high volume of equipment items in multiple internal facilities and external client facilities. Customers are internal and external and may include vendors, physicians, nurses, administrators and other hospital staff.


 
Skills, Experience and Equipment Experience
* Demonstrates advanced understanding and skills related to general electromechanical systems and devices as applied to area of specialty.

* Demonstrates advanced and detailed understanding and can fully communicate the use of devices supported, and can provide advanced support of acuity equipment for direct patient care.

* Demonstrates in-depth understanding of operations and environment supported (such as hospital, clinic, etc.), and in-depth understanding of common clinical terminology and that of life sciences such as anatomy and physiology.

* Has advanced experience in the assigned clinical environment.

* Demonstrates detailed knowledge and understanding of both local and national public safety and regulatory issues, especially those that apply to area of specialty.

* Demonstrates extensive knowledge of specialized clinical equipment such as radiological, laboratory, anesthesia/respiratory, and surgical/cath-lab/perfusion.

* Demonstrates basic understanding of project management terms and methods.


 
Customer Service and Teamwork
* Successfully solves organization-level customer services issues efficiently and effectively, especially those that apply to area of specialty.

* Adept at learning on the job, as well as teaching and mentoring others. Considered technical expert in area of specialty and can mentor other mentors.


 
Compliance/Safety
* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.

* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or GED - Required


Associate degree, military training or academic work aligned with biomed core competencies - Required


Basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, English and professional skills - Required


Bachelor degree - Preferred


Certification & Licensures
Certification by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) - Preferred

 

Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.


Experience
Minimum 5 years progressively responsible work experience with applicable specialty equipment - Required
Must be proficient at reading and analyzing schematic diagrams, including analog and digital circuits and possess a working knowledge of electrical and electronic fundamentals, including DC and AC circuits, semiconductor theory, digital circuit theory and microprocessor theory - Required
Must be proficient in Windows PC and network operating systems, PC repair, and have fundamental knowledge of Local Area Network configuration and troubleshooting - Required
