Boat Captains are responsible for following proper safety procedures to ensure the safety of guests, employees and vendors while operating the resort ferry boats.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills.
Calculate sightings of land, using electronic sounding devices, and following contour lines on charts and ability to use a compass.
Set courses and determine speeds, by using charts, area plotting sheets, sextants, and knowledge of local conditions/area.
Commercial Captains license required.
Able to work early mornings and late nights
Be aware that their working environment can be dangerous, especially when working during inclement weather.
Be able to spend long periods of time on your feet, sitting or working in close quarters.
Physical Requirement:
Ability to speak and hear.
Frequent walking with some standing at times.
Continual use of manual dexterity and gross motor skills with frequent use of bi-manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
Able to reach hands and arms in any direction and kneel and stoop repeatedly.
Able to spend long periods of time on your feet, sitting or working in close quarters.
Able to work early mornings and late into the evenings.
Duties:
Boat captains oversee the training of their mates on a regular basis and ensure that they are correctly performing their function correctly.
Inspect vessel to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessel and equipment, ensure that they are in conformance to regulations. Report any issues with the vessel promptly to your immediate supervisor; the Marina Manager.
Complete incident report forms as and when necessary.
Conduct the ship’s drills: man-overboard drills, fire drills and abandon-ship drills.
Greet all guests with a safety briefing prior to departure.
Make sure the Mate tags all luggage for resort arrivals.
The captain is liable for all actions, errors and omissions aboard the vessel, the captain has authority to do or undertake any act to ensure the safe conduct of the ship, and to enforce discipline aboard.
Direct and coordinate crew members or workers performing activities such as loading and unloading cargo.
Monitor the loading and discharging of cargo or passengers.
Signal crew members or deckhands to rig tow lines, open or close gates and ramps, and pull guard chains across entries.
Steer and operate the vessel using radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys and local knowledge.
Meet daily with department supervisors to facilitate the day’s activities.
Monitor the fuel gauge and inform the Marina Manager when refueling is required.
Coordinate with the Mate to keep the vessel clean and clear of hazards.
Read gauges to verify sufficient levels of hydraulic fluid, air pressure and oxygen.
Perform various marine duties such as checking for oil spills or other pollutants around ports and harbors. Report all issues with the Marina Manager.
Any other duties assigned by the manager or supervisor.
