Bringing books and people together since 1971, Tattered Cover Book Store is a Colorado institution and a community gathering place with four locations in metro Denver. Tattered Cover stores are located at Colfax Ave and Union Station in Denver, and at Aspen Grove in Littleton, in addition to a popular children’s book store at Stanley Marketplace in Aurora. In July 2024, Tattered Cover was acquired by Barnes & Noble who continues to operate these stores under the Tattered Cover brand.
To be a great bookseller, you provide excellent customer service which is friendly, genuine, and professional, and you always put the customers first ahead of everything and anything else. You make the shopping experience engaging and interactive by enthusiastically sharing your knowledge whether face to face or over the phone, helping a customer choose a new book, or a special gift. A bookseller creates enticing displays which are neat, tidy, and vibrant to the customer. Your passion for bookselling and willingness to help ensures your customers look forward to coming into your store. Booksellers are the heart of our bookstores. Under the supervision of the Store Manager and Retail Managers, Booksellers sell books and other merchandise to customers while providing exceptional customer service that keeps customers coming back to our stores. In addition, Booksellers perform a variety of tasks needed for the effective and profitable operation of the bookstore.Aurora• This is a sales position. This position sells books by assisting customers in finding books and merchandise, researching book requests, making book recommendations, placing orders, and preparing books for customer pick up or shipping.
• Consistently deliver a unique customer experience by providing exceptional customer service.
• Process sales transactions using POS system.
• Shelve and straighten books.
• Perform general section maintenance and cleaning.
• Receive books into inventory, including unboxing, labeling, and scanning into computer system*
• Process Customer Returns*
• Order processing*
• Barista duties (this applies only to stores with a café).
• Projects*—in general each Bookseller has one or more specialty areas which may include:
o Storytime for kids
o Display creation and maintenance
o Used book purchasing
o Managing customer payouts/credits
o In-store event hosting
o Other projects as needed
• Perform other duties as required or assigned.
*On a store-by-store basis, these duties may be classified either as a general duty which everyone is expected to fulfill, or as a project which is assigned to an employees on an individual basis.• Excellent customer service skills, including
o Ability to hand-sell
o Ability to maintain a pleasant, helpful, and professional manner during customer interactions
o Ability to communicate effectively with customers in person and by phone
• Computer Skills:
o Basic computer skills with the ability to perform basic tasks on a computer such as typing at a reasonable speed, using email, opening and closing apps and other software, searching for information
o Ability to learn to use company computer systems and tools effectively within a reasonable time period
• Teamwork: ability to function effectively in a team environment, including working cooperatively and communicating effectively with team members
• Change management skills: ability to adapt to workplace changes and to work effectively in an evolving retail environment.
• Ability and willingness to perform a variety of tasks
• Strong work ethic; must be able to work productively without close supervision
• Punctuality and reliable attendance are essential in this role
• Being well-read in one or more genres is desirable.
• At least one year of retail or customer service experience is preferred.
• Constantly Required:
o Standing/walking (70% of the time or more)
o Lifting books
o Interacting with customers
• Sometimes Required:
o Pushing/pulling carts of books and merchandise
o Kneeling, crouching, reaching
