JOB OVERVIEW

Gelcoat is the outermost structural layer on a fiberglass boat, designed to protect the underlying fiberglass layers. Gelcoat is a compound that produces a high-quality finish on fiberglass surfaces and incorporates a lot of chemistry, using epoxy, polyester resin, a catalyst, and other chemicals to achieve its strength and water-resistant properties. When cured, gelcoat combines with fiberglass to produce a smooth and durable surface that retards hull weakening from water intrusion and ultraviolet light.

The Gelcoat Specialist is responsible for applying gel coat to hulls, decks, and small parts according to our boat orders. To be successful as a Gelcoat Specialist, you must be able to perform a wide variety of tasks that require stamina and an eagerness to learn on the job. A good Gelcoat Specialist is able to understand instructions and carry them out efficiently within the given deadline.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure required parts and raw materials are ready to run when they are scheduledArrange material in a certain order or pattern according to documentation using numbers, letters, words or pictures. Ability to mix pigments and gelcoat materials to achieve accurate color matching. Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail to identify and rectify imperfections in gelcoat finishes. Manual Dexterity: Strong hand-eye coordination and manual skills for precise application of gelcoat. Equipment Operation: Proficiency in using spray guns, brushes, rollers, and other tools used in gelcoat application. Health and Safety Awareness: Adherence to safety protocols and knowledge of proper handling and disposal of chemicals. Communication: Good communication skills to work effectively with team members, boat designers, and customers. Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Quality Control: Inspect gelcoat finishes for defects, such as runs, sags, or pinholes, and make necessary adjustments or repairs to ensure a flawless appearance. Equipment Maintenance: Clean and maintain gelcoat application equipment, such as spray guns, to ensure optimal performance and prevent contamination.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 1+ years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Basic computer knowledgeAbility to read/hear, interpret and/or understand instructions given verbally or written and exchange accurate information with others.

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Proactive team player who is a self-starter with constant attention to improvement.Experience: Prior experience as a gelcoater or in a similar role is highly preferred. Familiarity with boat manufacturing or repair processes is a plus.Must possess excellent reasoning skills including researching system discrepancies and kitting errors.Must have basic reading comprehension and writing skills, be able to work from verbal and written instructions, be capable of working with computer terminals and be able to complete routine paperwork.Ability to remain extremely focused and organized with a high-attention to detail / high degree of accuracy.Able to work with multiple priorities and people.This role will require a high level of energy, creative thinking, and problem-solving abilities.Proficient in MS office (Outlook, Excel, Word)Familiarity with Materials Resources Planning (MRP) software and systemsMarine experience preferred but not requiredFamiliarity with modern warehousing practices and methods

SHIFT & WORK SCHEDULE

Boston Whaler has multiple shifts available to fit a variety of schedule. The standard work schedule for this position is Nightshift Sunday - Wednesday 5:00pm to 3:30am.Occasional overtime may be required based on scheduling and business needs, including non-schedule workdays or irregular hours.An hourly premium shift differential is available for employees working night shift and weekends

Shop floor working environment. Shop floor is non-climate controlled. Temperature fluctuates with outside environmental conditions, such as air temperature, radiant heat from sunlight, air movement, and humidity levels.Frequent exposure to high-temperatures, including a hot and humid environment, especially during summer months.Noise level is moderate with intervals of spikesRequired to wear safety glasses, Tyvex aprons, half mask respirator, and utilize other safety equipment and personal protect equipment (PPE) while present on the production/shop floor.Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, resins, fiberglass dust & cloths, epoxy, composites, and other chemicals. Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of times.Ability to regularly bend, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, reach, climb, and lift or move up to 35 pounds.Vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

The anticipated pay range for this position is $18.50 to $25.65, hourly. In addition to base pay a lamination premium of $1.00, a nightshift premium of $2.00, and a weekend premium of $3.00 is included. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location.

At Brunswick, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the salary range for their role. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the specifics of the candidate’s qualifications and the business context.
