Braille Proofreader
LAC Federal is seeking an experienced Music Braille Proofreader to provide proofreading and editing services for digital files of Braille music works and texts. The proofreader will verify the accuracy of transcriptions, compare digital files with original Braille hard copies, and ensure all files conform to recognized national Braille standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Braille music transcription and proofreading, as well as familiarity with multiple languages. This is a part-time remote position with very flexible work hours. + Proofread and edit digital Braille music files as specified in task orders from the National Library Service (NLS). + Compare digital Braille files with original Braille hard copies to ensure accuracy. The Library will provide source materials, which may include music scores, method books, instructional books, and popular anthologies. + Compare using a Braille display (e.g., 80-cell Brailliant) with one hand on the display and one on the original Braille hard copy. + Compare by embossing a copy of the digital file using a Braillo 300 embosser and the Duxbury program, with one hand on the embossed copy and the other on the original Braille hard copy. + Rearrange Braille text in older scores that exceed the 25 lines per page and 40 cells per line, ensuring they conform to current standards. + Ensure bar-over-bar music scores (multiple staves) are properly aligned on the same page. + Add running headers and page numbers at the top of each new page and remove old headings in the middle of the transcribed page. + Add transcriber’s notes to clarify the direction in which intervals of chords should be read, especially in right-hand chords, for the benefit of less experienced readers. + Maintain a list of all changes made to the Braille files and submit a proofreader’s report with each task order. + Ensure that text transcriptions, which may include materials in German, French, English, or Italian, conform to the Braille standards set by the NLS. Requirements + Be certified in braille transcription by the Library of Congress + Hold a braille music certification, full level for most tasks, or a minimum of associate level for selected tasks; + Experience transcribing or proofreading braille. + Knowledge of literary braille (EBAE, UEB), + Knowledge of music braille including current and previous standards + Some knowledge of French, German, Italian, Spanish, etc., as well as styles of classical and popular European and American music from various eras.
