Job Description

NBC News Digital is seeking an experienced Breaking News Editor to oversee its breaking politics coverage on weekend nights for NBCNews.com. The ideal candidate will have a passion for live news events, including live blogging, with experience in this area being a plus. They should be able to work quickly, accurately, and competitively, maintaining acute attention to detail at all times. Additionally, they must be comfortable making quick, independent decisions during fast-breaking news and alerts.

The breaking desk is the heart of the politics team on NBCNews.com. The reporters and editors cover and bring together all the latest news around campaigns, Congress, the White House, state legislatures and more, pulling in reporting from the digital, broadcast and editorial units for the site.The night shift plays an important role not only in covering news of the moment, but also picking up stories percolating from earlier in the day and getting a jump on stories coming the next day. 

The hours are Wednesday - Sunday from 4pm-12am ET. The editor would be the lead politics editor on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Our editor should be comfortable assigning and editing stories on all aspects of politics coverage, knowing how to move a story forward and make it appeal to our audience. They should be able to pull in the best reporting around the network, no matter the platform. This editor should be a master at SEO, headlines and ledes. And they should know when we need to jump on a story and when we don't.

Responsibilities:

Lead politics coverage on weekend nights and assist the larger politics team during the weekAssign and edit news stories to ensure they are thorough, well written, accurate and authoritativeActively monitor sources of breaking news and be prepared to jump on developments as soon as they happenWrite stories when neededCollaborate with other digital editors and staffers across the broadcast unit on breaking news coordinationMake sure stories are optimized with SEO, catchy headlines, strong ledes and visual elements to help tell our stories

Qualifications4+ years professional journalism experience2+ years editing politics news Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of relevant working experienceSkilled editor with outstanding communication skillsExpertise in writing SEO and optimizing stories for different platformsMust be willing to work in Washington, D.C., New York, NY or Los Angeles, CA

Additional Requirements:

Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.

This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
