Position Objective/Description:
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a Backhoe for laying and backfilling water, sewer and storm drain lines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Drives and uses bucket of the backhoe to dig, excavate and move dirt, rock, gravel or combinationObserves markings on the ground, hand signals and stakes to remove materialRead and interpret site plans and blueprints, survey markers and stakesLocate underground services, such as pipes and wires, prior to beginning workAvoid hazards or obstructions to ensure efficient operation of the backhoeMay be asked to run other equipment, including dozer and loadersMaintain cleanliness and good condition of trucksPerform minor maintenance to include cleaning, lubricating and refilling equipmentCheck fluid levels and change implements or attachmentsPerforms all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.Work closely with ground crew to achieve project objectives
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of backhoe operations including capacities and physical limitations, and issues involved in ground disturbance and compactionSafe driving abilities and strict adherence to safety requirements and proceduresAble to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skillsEffective communications with jobsite supervisor and co-workersGeneral knowledge of road construction processes.Demonstrate a safety first attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures.Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general publicAbility to work nights and weekends when necessaryMust have reliable transportation, and ability to travel to assigned worksite
Physical Demands:Constant physical effort, including extended sitting for at least 8 hour shiftIntermittent walking and standing on a construction site.Climb intermittentlyRegularly twist, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch to perform dutiesRegularly reach above shoulder levelMust be physically able to repetitively lift, push, pull and/or carry at least 50 pounds occasionally, and sometimes heavier weight.Agility, balance, and manual dexterity, as well as arm-hand steadinessAble to hear and respond to oral instructions in a noisy environment.Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach and grasp with hands and arms.Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination.Good vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus
Education / Experience:High School diploma or general education degree (GED)Three (3) years’ experience (recent) working as a Backhoe Operator.Active Driver’s license
Work Environment:
Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. Frequently works near heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. Work may involve exposure to a variety of substances found on construction site such as oil, grease, gasoline, concrete and diesel fuel. Periodically exposed to fumes, lubricants, airborne particles and dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
