The McDonald Observatory is an astronomical observatory located at McDonald Observatory, 16 miles from Fort Davis, Texas (440 miles away from UT Austin campus). Residence in the Observatory's residential community may be available. Position is considered an essential employee for emergency or critical response.

Purpose

To serve as the custodial crew leader at McDonald Observatory, while performing the same duties as other journey-level employees in the work group.

Responsibilities

Supervision. Leads, assigns, schedules, and coordinates the work of the building attendants. Responsible for appraisals, hiring, and work assignments of custodial team. Inspects completed work of the building attendants. Receives and handles concerns from occupants of the buildings.

Custodial Services. Performs custodial duties, typical of the custodial team, or special cleaning at McDonald Observatory facilities, including, but not limited to, the Mt. Locke facilities, Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET), HET gallery, Moody Visitors Center, Frank Bash Visitors Center, Physical Plant offices, Firehouse, residences and telescope dome facilities.

Purchasing and Events. Orders and purchases custodial supplies and restroom stock and enters purchases in the purchasing database. Assists with set-up and cleaning for special events.

Repairs. Reports need for building repairs to the Physical Plant staff and ticketing system.

Back-up and Other Tasks. Serve as back-up to the team and fills in for the different positions during vacations and sick leave. Performs other duties as assigned to meet business needs. Drives a UT vehicle and maintain eligibility pursuant to The University of Texas System Policy UTS157.

Required Qualifications

At least two years of custodial maintenance work.

Experience with methods, materials and equipment used in cleaning university buildings.

Manages the accuracy and attention to detail in performing cleaning assignments.

As a lead, responsible decision making and critical thinking, and demonstrable good judgement.

Effective communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal relationships).

Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and problem-solving abilities.

Ability to be adaptable, work independently, and as an integral member of a project team.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than two years of custodial maintenance work at university buildings

Supervisory experience preferred

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

$38,500 + depending on qualifications and experience
