The Opportunity

This position works out of our Lake County Illinois, Waukegan Building location in the Global Engineering Services division, serving the greater Lake and Cook County Facilities.  

As a Maintenance Mechanic Tech II, you’ll have the chance to provide “skilled trade” work with a group of other trades people, to build and support our facilities. Working closely with production managers, Facility Engineers, facility occupants and our 24 hours call center. All designed to support our team and company success. You will work with vendors for material quotes, installation, repairs and replacement of building infrastructure as needed.

Performs skilled maintenance and repair services of facility systems such as mechanical, electrical, and building systems.Ensure industry best practices within all production and office spacesContinuously improve quality processes and standardsSolve problems and support procurement and new idea implementationInterpret blueprints and schematicsIdentify reoccurring problems with equipment and machinerySupport facility inspections, Predictive and preventative maintenanceSupport other trades when neededConduct periodic inspections to evaluate requests for repair.Perform building walk-throughs to identify needed repairs and follow up with corrective action.Maintain facility to ensure reliable and effective operation.Basic knowledge of plumbing, piping, and identifying repairs neededMajor Responsibilities:Performs all types of mechanical maintenance work on a variety of equipment and systems including production and facility equipment located throughout Abbott Lake County sites.Work includes troubleshooting, ordering parts and installation of parts and material on various equipment such as, compressors, gearboxes, dryers, utility system pumps, hydraulic systems, hoists, cranes, etc.May specialize on maintenance and repair of, overhead doors, dock levelers, etc., along with other equipment related to either production or facility operations. Does preventive maintenance work on all plant equipment including air handlers, utility distribution equipment located throughout the plant.Assist PdM Mechanic I with performing vibration analysis and balancing functions on rotating equipment. Work may be on new equipment or rearrangement and/or retrofitting of existing equipment and accessories.Will do light machining work on machine lathes and milling machines, etc., to make basic shafts and cut keyways, etc.Performs training and hands on work instruction for less experienced mechanics.The. Maintenance Mechanic II will work as a multi-skill tradesperson, doing electrical, pipefitting, building maintenance and/or other work on special assignments as requested by the supervisor.Will be able to perform advanced troubleshooting and mechanical repairs and to install mechanical equipment and accessories according to Abbott engineering Standards.Required to work in various locations and environments through Abbott Lake County locations while performing maintenance activities.Some locations contain exposure to noise, chemicals, biohazards, odors, dirt and dust, humidity, hot and cold temperatures, heights, and confined spaces which require continuous awareness of, and conformance to, safe working procedures and policies.May be required to work outside during inclement weather and adverse working conditions or in confined spaces.Assesses each situation for potential risk and identifies areas for improvement.Assists in ensuring that cGMP and safe work policies and procedures are followed and maintained at all times in accordance with established company policies and Engineering Standards.Ensures that all documentation is in cGMP compliance.Should know CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) functions that pertain to maintenance, PM and related activities. Capable of utilizing the standard department tools including computer-based applications, work order system, basic operating procedures, data gathering systems, forms, logs and charts.

Work to meet and accommodate production line, production facility needs and office personnelSafety training, Computer based training and instructor led training requirementsMeet and understand FDA, EPA regulations as needed for our Health Care Facility needsErrors in shutting down equipment or opening switches inappropriately could result in electrical equipment shutdown and resultant product losses in hundreds of thousands of dollars.Accidentally energizing electrical/mechanical systems and/or equipment could have life or death implications.Failure to schedule maintenance work with Production Management could have an adverse impact on customers’ operations/production.Failure to adhere to operating instructions and/or safety policies could result in bodily injury and/or fatalities, property losses through fires, explosions, and chemical releases to self and others.Errors in shutting down bio exhaust and clean room facilities, for example, could cause system shutdowns which would create immediate hazards to individuals. Closing valves inappropriately could result in production and/or facility equipment shutdown and result in product losses in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Required Qualifications

High school education or equivalent.Must possess a minimum of 3-5 years of increasing job knowledge and responsibility in field of mechanics. This experience must indicate proficiency in all aspects of mechanical construction and maintenance work. Will have advanced understanding of all aspects of physics and mechanical theory and application to mechanical systems in a commercial and/or industrial environment.

The base pay for this position is $22.05 – $44.15 per hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
