Bus Driver and Maintenance Worker JobID: 352 + Position Type: Transportation/ Route/Shuttle Driver + Date Posted: 12/3/2024 + Location: VSCSD Bus Garage + Date Available: 07/01/2025    Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District JOB TITLE: BUS DRIVER – ROUTE AND ACTIVITY REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt - Hourly STATUS: Part Time – Typically 20 to 25 hours / week DATE REVISED: November 28, 2022 BASIC FUNCTIONS: + Transport students to and from school, following a preplanned route according to a definite time schedule. + Drives the bus carefully and in compliance with all traffic regulations. + Assumes responsibility for the safety of school children in loading, unloading and transporting them to and from school. + Signals children when to cross street or highway and assures that children are safely across upon departure from bus. + In the absence of a bus monitor, the driver is responsible for maintaining discipline and reporting inappropriate behavior to the Transportation Director, Principal or other supervisor. + Assists Mechanic and Director of Transportation by reporting any mechanical concerns related to the safe and efficient operation of the school bus. + Works cooperatively with the Transportation Director to effectively coordinate schedules and day-to-day operations. JOB SPECIFICATIONS / QUALIFICATIONS: + High School Diploma or Equivalent + Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air brakes and Passenger (P) and School Bus Endorsements (S) + Good Driving Record + Ability to pass and meet health requirements specified in a Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical + Must pass Drug and Alcohol testing as required by State and Federal Law for a CDL and Passenger Endorsement + Must pass criminal history and child abuse background checks. + Ability to read maps and follow written and verbal geographic directions. + Organizational skills needed to effectively meet scheduling requirements for daily bus routes, field trips and activity trips + Technology skills adequate to utilize the time clock system and other technologies relevant to the position. + Ability to communicate effectively utilizing a two-way radios and telephone. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: + Seasonal Contract – Typically 180 School Days (August – May) plus special field or activity trips during summer. + The VSCSD Board of Directors establishes hourly wage & work year. + Upon request from the immediate supervisor, employee shall submit to the Federal and State requirements regarding Drug and Alcohol testing for the purpose of securing a Commercial Driver’s License. EVALUATION: The Director of Transportation evaluates the performance of this job. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: + Follow local, state, and federal regulations and Board Policies pertaining to the School Transportation Program. + Drives school bus or other multi-passenger vehicle to transport students from rural areas and in-town neighborhoods to schools, on field trips and to school activities. + Comply with traffic regulations in order to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner. + Follow safety rules as students are boarding and exiting buses, and as they cross streets near bus stops. + Pick up and drop off students at regularly scheduled neighborhood locations, following strict time schedules. + Report any bus malfunctions or needed repairs to the Mechanic or Transportation Director. + Report delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations, using mobile two-way radios or telephone. + Check fuel level on bus/passenger vehicle as needed. Refuel as needed on any out of state travel. + Check the condition of a vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, water, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order. + Read maps, and follow written and verbal geographic directions in an accurate and efficient manner. + Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort. + Keep bus interior clean for passengers and to promote a positive image for the school district. + Maintain knowledge of basic first-aid procedures. + Maintain order among pupils during trips, in order to ensure safety. + Prepare and submit reports that may include the number of passengers on trips, hours worked, mileage, and fuel consumption. + Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Transportation and Superintendent of Schools. + Required to attend annual 3-hour bus driver re-certification course. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: + Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques. + Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time. + Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while carrying out required functions such as driving, checking fluids, cleaning the interior or washing the exterior of a school bus. + Able to read, write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions. + Able to communicate effectively utilizing a two-way radio or telephone in a clear, precise voice. + Able to work in confined space such as a vehicle/school bus. This individual must comply with all VSCSD Policies and Procedures while cooperating with staff and patrons to promote the educational values of the School District. The Maintenance Technician works with the Superintendent, Central Office Personnel, Food Service, Transportation, Operations and Grounds Departments to perform day-to-day building maintenance and repair. JOB SPECIFICATIONS / QUALIFICATIONS: + High School Diploma or Equivalent.
