The Role
The Business Unit Director leads the development of the Respiratory & Immunology, as well as Vaccines & Immunotherapies Business Unit (BU) within the country. The BUD is accountable for setting the vision, defining the BU strategy, coordinating the cross-functional Therapeutic Area (TA) and brand-level operational plans, and leading the commercial team to drive optimal outcomes for patients who can benefit from our innovative medicines. This role aims to establish AstraZeneca as a global leader in each TA.
As a member of the Marketing Company Senior Management Team (SMT), the BUD shares accountability for leadership, strategic direction, business development, and compliance of the local market. The BUD is directly accountable for the success of the BU Marketing and Sales teams within the country. They drive this through competitive performance, astute financial P&L management, cohesive global and local cross-functional working, reinforcing AstraZeneca's values of scientific leadership and patient-centricity, and contributing to AstraZeneca’s goal of being a top employer.
In addition, they have overall responsibility for ensuring that activities within the Market are compliant, aligned with global strategies, and sanctioned by the appropriate stakeholders.
What you’ll do
Building the Business Unit:Utilises a deep understanding of the TA ecosystem, patient journey, and payor needs to define and build an effective BU.Inspires the BU to develop and utilise patient and customer understanding to challenge and innovate within their roles and the wider AstraZeneca environment.Ensures strong external relationships within the TA ecosystem are built and maintained with healthcare professionals, payors, and patient groups.Identifies roles and capabilities required for success and drives talent development and recruitment of high-calibre individuals.Builds high-performing teams focused on excellence in recruiting, training, development, efficiency improvement, and performance management.Works with the SMT to develop short- to long-term AstraZeneca strategy to ensure BU portfolio success.Shaping, developing & implementing AstraZeneca strategy:
Influences AstraZeneca Global direction within BU ensuring critical success factors for the country are supported.Develops and translates the Global strategic long-term vision for AstraZeneca BU into an effective country plan that defines and delivers ‘value’ at multiple levels.Provides expert insight and direction across the portfolio to ensure successful launches and line extensions within TAs/Brands.Defines and communicates above-brand therapy area strategies to deliver success across the AstraZeneca portfolio for brands and patients.Oversees creation of innovative strategic brand plans across the BU portfolio.Ensures operational implementation of these plans while identifying and maximising new growth opportunities.Leads development of a cohesive Diagnostic/Patient identification strategy that works with brand strategies to grow markets and transform care.Determines, agrees, and delivers upon Growth, Sales, and Operational metrics for the country.Leadership and Capability Development across the Business Unit:
Inspires and leads capability development for BU teams and individuals. Ensures an innovative cross-function account planning and customer engagement strategy is implemented.Ensures effective talent management, recruitment & succession planning.For Managers and Project Team Leaders:
Ensure compliance by team members and third parties by reinforcing the Code of Conduct and all relevant AstraZeneca Policies and Standards.Manager Accountabilities include Ethical Conduct and Compliance, Team Management, Performance Management, Individual Development Planning, Talent Management, Recruitment, People information, SHE accountabilities, and Fiscal and Financial awareness.Leaders with accountability for GXP areas must understand legal and regulatory requirements of their roles in providing appropriate resources to maintain the Quality system.Essential Skills/Experience
At least 10 years proven work experience in a similar role in multinational matrix company and previous industry sectorExcellent command in English and German (written and spoken)University graduate in natural science, business management, or any equivalent BS degreeBusiness Acumen: Understands AstraZeneca’s objectives, strategy, value chain, external business environment, fundamentals of running a successful business including financial management. Uses this understanding to shape activities and decision-making.Impact and Influence: Anticipates needs of others to achieve appropriate outcomes. Inspires BU to deliver innovative solutions offering true value to patients and healthcare systems.TA expertise: Possesses deep therapeutic understanding of TA ecosystem within the country ensuring correct structural decisions during BU building.Patient centricity: Understands patient’s perspective from diagnosis throughout their journey. Uses this information to challenge status quo delivering for patients and AstraZeneca.Customer value proposition: Challenges team to craft value proposition for patients and stakeholders within healthcare system.
