General Summary:
Buyers are responsible for obtaining CarMax’s used car inventory through appraisal offers and by attending off-site auctions. Buyers exercise
discretion and independent judgment in making important business decisions involving purchasing, planning, negotiating, representing the
company, promoting sales, and business research. This position is filled internally by those who have successfully completed the Buyer-in-Training
program.


Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
 Ability to independently evaluate and negotiate current market prices, understand and assess vehicle damage and subsequent costs
involved with the damage, and make financially sound purchasing and pricing decisions for the company through customer appraisal
offers, offsite auctions, or online venues.
 Assess and prepare customer appraisal offers, including the determination of a CarMax written offer for vehicle appraisal.
 Oversee, coordinate, and assist on-site/ virtual wholesale auctions and attend off-site auctions.
 Conduct accurate vehicle condition assessments by collecting, recording, and communicating all required information.
 Leverage reporting and functional expertise to effectively manage retail and wholesale margins.
 Serve as a functional resource for other departments with regards to vehicle conditions, values, and technical specifications.
 Utilize technology to effectively collaborate with team members at other locations.
 Assist with the training and development of Buyer’s Assistants, Vehicle Condition Assessors, and/or Buyers-in-Training
 Deliver exceptional customer service and work with other departments to create Iconic customer experiences.
 Support and embrace the execution and sustainment of new store procedures processes and technology platforms.
 Execute initiatives and fundamentals, including Offer Role and Offsite.
 Option to work remotely for certain shifts and duties as assigned by the Manager.

Qualifications:
Work requires the ability to:
 Make independent judgments regarding important business decisions involving the purchase of CarMax’s vehicle inventory.
 Make detailed financial decisions within strict timeframes and retain crucial information regarding the retail and wholesale vehicle market.
 Multi-task in a high-energy, fast-paced work environment
 Read and understand store and zone level business reports.
 Demonstrate successful communication skills with both internal and external customers. This entails speaking and listening effectively
during interactions with our retail and wholesale customers, external vendors, and interactions with store Associates in group and
individual settings.
 Demonstrate successful attention to detail and analytical skills, often involving statistical management while making timely and
accurate decisions about business assets.
 Demonstrate a proven track record of successful Associate Development for self and others through achievement-oriented goal
setting, career planning, and focused execution.
 Be a champion for change in a team-oriented environment.
 Understand vehicle warranties, structural aspects of vehicles, auction sales and trends, pricing, and reconditioning costs.
 Position requires a valid driver’s license.
 

Requirements:
 Flexibility to work in an indoor/outdoor environment, ability to walk or stand for long periods of time, and work in any inclement
weather for several hours.
 Flexible work hours with shifts that may include nights, weekends, and holidays (up to 50% overnight travel is required).
 Wear CarMax clothing (acquired through the company) at all times while working in the stores, and maintain a professional
appearance in accordance with the Standards of Professional Appearance Policy for Offsite and Auction attendance while working at
Offsite Auctions
 Adhere to all CarMax policies and procedures, including, but not limited to the Code of Business Conduct, Culture of Integrity Policy,
Asset Protection, EH&S (Environmental, Health & Safety), and Standards of Professional Appearance.

Primarily working in an outdoor environment; may include working at times in noisy and/or inclement weather conditions
