CADET POLICE OFFICER

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience

Required:

High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent   Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License  Must be at least 20 years of age prior to start, and at least 21 years of age by graduation from the academy

 

Licensing Status

Must be able to successfully pass a background and character investigation in compliance with PL 101.630. Will require a post-offer, pre-employment, and random drug screening. Must successfully pass all of the following additional requirements: vision requirements; medical examination; physical agility examination in accordance with State and Federal guidelines; psychological test prior to the start of Law Enforcement Academy; has not been convicted of or pled guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or within the 3-year period immediately preceding their application, to any violation of any federal or state law or local ordinance relating to aggravated assault, theft, driving while intoxicated, controlled substances or other crime including moral turpitude and has not been released or discharged under dishonorable conditions from any of the armed forces of the United States; background on driving record.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outside work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions. Work hours subject to rotating days, shiftwork and holidays with overtime work required. Subject to hazards which may cause personal bodily harm; possible exposure to toxins and drugs, arduous physical exertion under rigorous and unusual conditions, fumes, explosives, automotive fluids, smoke; diseases; cuts bruises, burns, common cold, influenza, dust, odors and elevated noise levels. Tasks may be performed on uneven, inclined, hard and soft carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces. Duties may involve walking, running, jumping, climbing over barriers, discharging a firearm, standing for long periods of time, sitting and crouching. Specific required movements include the following: Trunk- bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, carry. Arms – reach, carry, lift, twist, and rotate. Legs – lift, push, pull, twist, and rotate. Hands – Grasp, manipulate bilateral coordination, hand and eye coordination, and overall and finger dexterity. Lift up to 85% of body weight.
