We are passionate about solving business problems through data and technology and this internship will allow candidates to work closely with a of high-performing colleagues responsible for developing and implementing in-depth data analytics. Finance data scientists have highly visible roles with frequent exposure to teams across the Enterprise, including business partners, Risk, and others. Given the broad remit of our teams, an ideal candidate will bring a unique balance of strong analytical and communication skills. Candidates will be asked to help define new methods of prediction that are aligned with them with our business strategy. **How will you make an impact in this role?:** + Innovate and develop new, more sophisticated ways to track, analyze, and forecast customer behaviors and trends to inform both near- and longer-term business strategies + Develop and / or enhance machine learning modelling techniques to forecast spend, lend and other metrics which sit within the team’s purview + Develop techniques and tools to influence American Express’s decisions on credit, fraud, and recessionary preparedness + Support balance sheet management by focusing on efficient asset-liability management, liquidity risk management along with capital adequacy + Play the role of strategic advisors as the guide on spend trends, converging data [e.g., multivariate analyses] to parse weak signals and get ahead of inflection points This position will be based in New York City **Minimum Qualifications:** + Currently enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science Engineering, Quantitative Finance, or Statistics + A graduation date between **December 2025 and June 2026** **Preferred Qualifications:** + Hands-on experience dealing with large quantities of complex data and ability to derive actionable insights from those data + Proficiency in SQL and Python or PySpark + Machine learning development and experience in application of advanced predictive analytics + Experience with Power BI, Tableau or other visualization tools + Proven experience communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences, bridging the gap between academic outputs and real-world applications + Highly levels of motivation and intellectual curiosity combined with excitement to work on ‘whitespace’ projects + Intuition for striking the right balance between speed and accuracy + Ability to break down / implement complex ideas and create structured output from data in an explainable way + Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with distinguished attention to detail Our team will review completed applications on a rolling basis.
