Cannery Manager

As the Cannery Manager at our Alaskan processing facilities, this role oversees all aspects of the canning process at a seafood processing plant, ensuring the production of high-quality, safe, and marketable canned seafood products. Key responsibilities include managing production schedules, supervising staff, maintaining equipment, and enforcing quality control standards. This role must have a deep understanding of food safety regulations, canning processes, and industry best practices. Additionally, they should possess strong leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication to coordinate with various departments and ensure smooth operations. 

Essential Functions/Qualifications  

The responsibilities of the position include the following:  

Develops and implements production schedules to meet customer demand and optimize resource utilization.  Ensures adherence to strict food safety and quality standards, including HACCP principles.  Oversees the maintenance and repair of canning equipment to minimize downtime and maximize efficiency.  Leads and motivates a team of production workers to achieve productivity and quality goals.  Ability to lead and motivate teams, delegate tasks, and resolve conflicts. Manages inventory levels of raw materials, packaging materials, and finished goods to avoid shortages and overstocks.  Stays updated on and ensures compliance with all relevant food safety regulations, including FDA, USDA, and local health department requirements. Implements cost-saving measures and monitors production expenses to optimize profitability. Meticulous attention to detail to ensure product quality and consistency. Other duties to ensure facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Machining Operations: Proficient in operating a variety of machine tools, including CNC machines, lathes, milling machines, and grinders. Utility Player - Having someone well rounded in all plant functions allows them to be a utility player during the season when gaps in the structure arise – due to losing a position or maybe under performance in some areas.  Experience working in a high-volume, fast paced environment required. The ability to adapt and excel when business plans change. You will need to look at your packed to-do list and decide which tasks to tackle first when all the work is a priority with imminent deadlines.  Creative – You are not only logical and analytical but can display a great deal of creativity in your problem–solving. The best solution is not always the most obvious and to outmaneuver your challenger it is often necessary to think outside the box.  Organizational skills - are competencies you can use to establish structure and order within your role. This will help you work more efficiently and effectively and, as a result, increase your productivity and performance. When you display strong organizational skills in this position, you will also have a strong aptitude for time management, goal setting and understanding how to meet their objectives.

Education and Experience  

BS/BA degree preferred.   Management, Engineering or Technical degree preferred.   7+ years of experience in seafood or food manufacturing management in positions of progressive responsibility.  5 years of seafood industry leadership experience required.   Salmon and Herring production experience is required.  Prior production and food safety training and certifications are preferred.  

Work Environment and Schedule  

This position requires an onsite presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska. While performing the duties of this job, this role will be regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts, in addition to occasionally being exposed to outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is loud.    

Physical Demands  

In this role it can involve physical demands. This includes spending time on the production floor, which may require standing for extended periods, walking, occasional lifting moderate to heavy, bending, and kneeling. Exposure to noise, especially in manufacturing environments, is also a factor.
