About this opportunity:
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Downstream Capital Management, the Capital Planning Engineer will drive consistency in facility project justifications and enhance the capital efficiency of downstream investment portfolio. Collaborating closely with Downstream Facilities, Asset Development, Technical Services, and Project Teams, this role is critical in advancing investment initiatives through the stage-gate process, analyzing the downstream portfolio for senior leadership, and guiding asset teams toward capital optimization.
This position can be based in Calgary, Lloydminster, or Ohio.
What you’ll do:
Lead the Downstream facility base project justification / evaluation through stage-gate process by ensuring consistent decision framing through determining the specific challenge and opportunity to be addressed through each initiative, including guiding projects through the early stages of development and support the project through sanction
Screen initiatives impartially based on strategic, risk reduction, and financial metrics and rank them against other investment opportunities within the asset and across the Downstream business, including facilitating the investment governance process to allow senior leadership to prioritize across the overall portfolio
Oversee investment risk evaluations and ensure consistency through sensitivity analyses and scenario alignment in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including HSE, Refining Operations, site projects, Engineering, major project delivery teams, regulatory, commissioning, and start-up teams
Establish and maintain strong working relationships with Manufacturing Facilities, Downstream Performance Improvement, Downstream Technical Services, Major Projects, Site Project Teams, and Joint Venture Management team
Develop approval packages for asset leadership and senior executives, follow up on recommendations, and ensure alignment of project plans with business strategies, as well as steward initiatives through Downstream and corporate investment approval processes
Compile and quality-check the in-year and Long-Range Plan (LRP) bottom-up project lists across the entire Downstream portfolio, ensuring standardized, complete, and consistent inputs
Underpin Downstream capital investment improvement plan following Solomon benchmarking insights along with Downstream Journey Book goals
Who you are:
Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
Legally authorized to work in Canada
A post-secondary degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) is required for Canadian applicants; US applicants must be legally entitled to work in the US
Minimum of 4+ years of combined experience in facility engineering, risk management, and project management, with at least 1 year in refinery operations
Experience in risk assessment, direct client-facing environments, and fast-paced settings is considered an asset
Strong business acumen and capability in decision analysis, including economic evaluation
