For more than 60 years, Nationwide Insurance has operated business aircraft to support the needs of associates, business partners, and members. As a part of our crew, you will be on exceptionally maintained aircraft and will be a crucial partner to ensure each trip is seamlessly operated.

The Nationwide Aviation Business Center provides safe, reliable, critical, time-sensitive travel, for Nationwide Insurance professionals to numerous locations across the United States. Here, you’ll feel welcomed and valued. As Captain, you’ll have the opportunity to implement process improvements and assist with projects to fully learn and grow with the operation. When assigned as the Pilot in Command (PIC) you’ll assume command control of the aircraft and be responsible for the operation, safety and security of the aircraft and the safety of all crew, passengers and cargo.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Operates the aircraft in accordance with operator and manufacturer procedures and aircraft limitations.

Ensures the security of the aircraft during its operation.

Checks and assesses the weather and all applicable Notice to Airmen (NOTAMS).

Ensure all pre-flight inspections and flight planning requirements have been met, (weight and balance, fuel, oil and oxygen requirements).

Assumes final responsibility for and makes decisions to start, delay, or cancel the flight when operating conditions dictate.

Completes all post-flight record keeping duties.

Adheres to all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), International Civil Aviation Organization and Nationwide Aviation Business Center regulations, standards, and procedures. Responsible for ensuring all crew and passenger travel documents are valid for the flight.

Ensures passenger safety briefings are complete. Ensures all passenger needs are met, including ground transportation arrangements.

Maintains proficiency and currency in assigned aircraft.

Approves invoices and expenses for flight related activities.

Ensures that a flight will not be commenced or continued beyond a suitable airport if a flight crew member is incapable of performing their duties.

Notifies the Vice President, General Manager, and Chief Pilot of any National Transportation Safety Board notifiable event and assists with submitting the report immediately and by the most expeditious means available.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Sr. Director, Chief Pilot; this is an individual contributor role.

Typical Skills and Experience:


Education: College degree or equivalent experience preferred.

License/Certification/Designations: Airline Transport Pilot certificate, Multi-engine rating, and Pilot In Command (PIC) type rating for the aircraft operated. Restricted Radiotelephone Operator permit. English proficiency. Valid automobile driver’s license. Valid passport. FAA First Class Medical certificate. Must pass a pre-employment assessment.

Experience: 3,500 hours total time; 1,500 hours PIC time or 1,000 hours multi-engine turbine. Five years corporate or commercial aviation experience. Flight time may be reduced to 3,000 hours if pilot has a minimum of 1,000 hours experience in aircraft make and model. 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Possess leadership and critical thinking skills; ability to communicate effectively and make decisions in coordination with the trip Captain. Passionate about business aviation and excited about creating the best experience for passengers. Able to adapt to constantly evolving situations. Works outside the cockpit for operational excellence and continuous improvement. Complete knowledge of FAA regulations and International Civil Aviation Organization standards. Captains must have complete knowledge of aircraft systems and procedures. Must be capable of commanding and controlling the aircraft and satisfactorily passing FAA 61.58 PIC.

Job Conditions:

Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)

Working Conditions: Normal office environment in the completion of administrative duties and assignments. Non-standard or extended work may be required based on project needs. Long periods in the aircraft serving as the Pilot of company owned or operated aircraft. May experience adverse weather conditions in the performance of assigned pilot duties. May be required to lift baggage weighing up to 50 pounds to a height of five feet. All selected candidates for the job will be required to submit to a post-offer, pre-employment psychological and cognitive assessment to confirm fitness for duty.
