Job Title:         Career Skills Instructor

Department:   Career Development (CD)

Reports To:     Education & Training Senior Manager

Supervises:      None

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt

Pay Grade:      N5

Job Type:        Regular, Full-Time

General Functions:

The Career Skills Instructor works with CITC participants in both group and individual settings with the goal of enhancing their ability to obtain, maintain, and advance in their employment journey. The Career Skills Instructor collaborates with CITC staff to support participant career advancement by developing and administering the Career Skills component of the Career Development department. The Career Skills Instructor facilitates culturally relevant training designed to enhance employment assets. These trainings focus on identifying professional strengths, applying transferable skills, and translating rural work experiences to the urban job market. Additional topics include goal setting, decision-making, traditional and cultural skill-building (such as beading, language classes, and sewing), budgeting for success, appropriate workplace attire, effective communication, boundary-setting, relationship-building, and job-search strategies (including résumé writing, interviewing, and job searching). The Career Skills Instructor also addresses other identified areas of need to support participants in progressing toward self-sufficiency.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Develop, lead, and administer Career Skills classes in partnership with department leadership.Work in partnership with CITC staff, external partners, and agencies as needed to support participants. Develop Career Skills classes that focus on building foundational and soft skills to help participants gain employment, maintain their jobs, and advance their careers.Promote and model goal-setting, workplace etiquette, ethical decision-making, and effective communication through individual or group classes.Identify and address gaps in Career Skills classes, groups. and mentoring services to continually incorporate traditional cultural strengths and values into programming.Motivate and model positive, healthy patterns of behavior.Facilitate and administer Career Skills curriculum in one-on-one or group settings.Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.Perform all other related duties as needed and assigned.

Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values, Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree education, counseling, management, or related field.Two (2) years’ experience as a case manager, job coach, work adjustor or life skills instructor.  Experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for year basis. Experience teaching adults in a classroom or workshop setting. Demonstrated knowledge of Alaska Native and American Indian values and belief systemsDemonstrated ability to provide culturally competent services.Valid Alaska Driver’s license and insurable under CITC automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver’s license for at least three years.Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

May require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and consistently working on a computer with repetitive motion.The need to occasionally move around the office to access filing cabinets, storage cabinets, and office equipment may be necessary.Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
