Duties and Responsibilities: Performs repairs or all facets of wood construction on campus facilities, including such items as wood frame doors and windows, installing, and repairing screens and enclosures, and removal and installation of door checks and locks, installation of all types of decorative moldings i.e., crown moldings, door and window casings, base, chair rail, etc. Designs and constructs custom made cabinets and built-ins, constructs ready-made or made-to-order bookcases, special displays, and other furniture and equipment products. Design, layout, and construct building partitions and room dividers. Glazes windows, and installs and/or repairs Plexiglas, Formica, and a variety of other synthetic decorative materials. Operates and keeps in good working order a variety of equipment including hand and power tools. Teams with other trades in the carpentry phase of installing fixtures, electrical boxes, window fans and air conditioners, plumbing runs, and other carpentry needs in replacement and renovation work. Installs complete flooring applications, to include carpeting and tile. Teams with other trades in the carpentry phase of installing such equipment as exhaust fans, windows and wall mounted air conditioners, and other mechanical equipment. Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, schematics, and product specifications. Performs various carpentry, masonry, painting, and plastering work as required. Coordinates repairs with other trades, offices and departments affected by work required. Assists in furniture and event set ups and break downs, decorations for special functions, meetings, etc. Performs other duties as assigned within the normal scope of the department’s responsibilities and the individual’s capabilities
Minimum Qualifications: HS diploma or equivalent and current documentation indicating successful passing of formal training classes or programs in the Carpentry trade or be able to exhibit acceptable life experiences in carpentry work. Must possess and maintain personal hand tools required for the trade. Able to provide specifications, estimates and bill of materials for all projects. Is currently classified and working as Carpenter 2nd Class and meets and maintains all qualifications for Carpenter 2nd Class. A minimum of five years of service in the trade at Villanova University (upon the discretion of Facilities Management.) Must be highly knowledgeable on all lumber, engineered panels, other engineered lumber products, and fasteners. Must have the ability to repair and install all types of doors and associated hardware. Must have the ability to properly estimate, size, and install various floor framing systems. Must have the ability to properly construct metal framing members. Must have the ability to properly estimate, size, and install roof construction, including rafter layout and materials calculations. Must have the ability to properly construct rough framing, layout of joist, bridging, sheathing, wall framing systems, and skills involved in layout and installation of door hardware. Must have the ability to properly estimate, size, and install various exterior and interior finish applications, including insulation and ventilation; roofing; cornice construction; window installation; door frame and door; siding; drywall construction; wall panel; ceiling installation; stair framing; finish floor installation; and interior trim applications. Must have the ability to properly estimate, size, and install cabinets and countertops, including fabrication and installation of laminated tops (Formica); custom made cabinets and shelves. Basic Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Outlook skills. Must have the ability to follow both verbal and written directions in English; the ability to interact with students, faculty, administration, and staff in a professional and positive manner, as well as the ability to read and understand NFPA and IBC codes and OSHA guidelines, such as Material Safety Data Sheets, equipment safety data plates, fuel/chemical flash points, etc. Must have the physical ability to climb ladders, to bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs.; and the ability to work in enclosed spaces. Must have the ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, drawings/sketches, schematics, and diagrams. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. s. Must not have any disciplinary actions on file within the previous twelve months of applying for this position. Must possess current ANSI/OSHA compliant training card to operate aerial lift, bucket truck, forklift, or all. Must have the ability to erect and work on scaffolding as per OSHA standards.
