Job Title Carpenter Posting Number F006247 Position Status Full Time Assignment Length This field only applies to Faculty Grant Funded No Category Plant Operations Class Code 62 Starting Pay $47,424 Special Note Location Northeast Department DT Physical Plant Job Summary Reporting to the Construction Leader, the Carpenter constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, wallboard, and related materials conforming to local building codes. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Essential Performance Requirements* Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated Selects specified type of lumber or other materials Prepares layout, and marks cutting and assembly lines on materials; shapes materials to prescribed measurements; assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue; verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter’s level Erects framework for structures, builds stairs, and lays-out and installs partitions and cabinet work Lays subflooring and covers it with building paper to keep out moisture and lays hardwood, parquet, wood strip, and block floors by nailing floors to subfloor or cementing them to mastic, asphalt, or other appropriate bases Applies shock absorbing, sound deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures at ground level Welds metal parts to steel structural members Performs building walk-through for all relevant preventative tasks Cleans shops, maintains tools and equipment, and performs inventory of tools and material in and around shop Repairs furniture and chairs

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to prolonged periods of standing, climbing, and kneeling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to safely work with sharp tools and a variety of power equipment.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions and terrains and occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud and require use of personal protective equipment.
