Job Details Job ID: 5135610 Job Description Position Title: Carpenter Trades Foreman Salary Range: Regionally Competitive FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director of Facilities/Director of Service Building Job Summary: Plan, organize, direct and control school carpentry, glazing and painting operations so that facilities and equipment are utilized at optimum levels at all times. Repairs, troubleshoots and installs carpentry needs for the school operations so that facilities and equipment are utilized at optimum levels at all times. Characteristics of Work + Types of Activities Performed Frequently: Responsible for planning, developing, estimating, overseeing carpentry, glazing and painting projects, including providing follow-up and coordination with school administrators. Assists in developing an ongoing preventive maintenance program and directs the operation of the district’s carpentry, glazing, and painting vehicle fleet. Ensures the construction and repair of structures align with the Indiana Building Code and School House Planning standards. Maintains accountability for all tools and vehicles assigned to the department. + Types of Activities Performed Occasionally: Responsible for developing specifications for carpentry trade supplies to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness. Assists in the planning and coordination of Capital Projects Fund initiatives, contributing technical expertise to support long-term facility improvements. Attends professional meetings, as appropriate, to stay informed of industry best practices and emerging trends. Specific Job Responsibilities + Directs and controls the daily deployment of the carpentry, glazing and painting staff. + Direct supervision of all department personnel. + Ensures departmental operations are performed in accordance with approved policies and procedures. + Directs the entire departmental staff in a manner which assures satisfactory performance levels by each and every member of the operation. + Provides positive assistance to all personnel in an effort to improve overall departmental functions. + Develops and submits specifications for departmental materials, supplies, tools, special projects, and emergency needs. + Recommends new maintenance products, materials, supplies and tools. Assist with in-service training programs as needed. + Develops sketches, bills of material, and estimated costs for all department work other than emergency jobs. + Visits sites of departmental projects in order to keep abreast of progress and to learn of other maintenance needs. + Reviews cost statements for finished jobs compared with the estimated cost, and explains variances, if any. + Repairs walls, ceilings, bulletin boards, chalk boards, shelves, floor tile, doors and hardware, window shades and furniture. + Installs walls, ceilings, bulletin boards, chalk boards, shelves, floor tile, doors and hardware and window shades. + Reads blueprints and shop drawings as required to complete repair or new construction projects. + Oversees the work order system for the department. + Ensures all forms in the department are properly filed. + Responds to emergency calls when asked. + Responsible for the tools and equipment assigned to the department. Performs related duties, as required or assigned. Special Characteristics of the Position + Required experience or training: High School education with four (4) years of apprenticeship schooling or equal and four (4) years journeyman carpenter. Valid operator's license. + Desired experience or training: Eight (8) years of experience in the carpentry trade. Post-secondary training related to the carpentry trade. + Special requirements: A practical knowledge of all aspects of the carpentry, glazing and painting trades methods, and practices as they apply to school facilities. + Working relationships: Ability to estimate and control maintenance costs and to stimulate cooperation between subordinates and fellow employees. Working Conditions + Mental Demands: Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and work orders to complete carpentry projects accurately and efficiently. Requires problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to measure and calculate dimensions with precision. Must be capable of planning and executing tasks independently or as part of a team, while adhering to safety standards and project timelines. + Physical Demands: Must be able to work in confined spaces, on ladders, rooftops, and in various indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to lift 60 pounds without assistance and safely handle tools and equipment for extended periods. + Environmental Conditions: Work is primarily performed indoors, but may also include outdoor tasks in varying weather conditions. The position involves exposure to dust, wood particles, chemicals such as adhesives and sealants, and occasional fumes from paints or finishes. Tasks may require working in confined spaces, at heights, or using ladders and scaffolding. Frequent lifting, bending, and the use of hand and power tools are required. The carpenter must be available for scheduled work hours and emergency repairs, including evenings or weekends when necessary. Proper safety equipment and adherence to safety protocols are essential to ensure personal and workplace safety. Must be able to handle stress.
