Summary This announcement is for multiple seasonal Cartographic Technician positions for Montana Dakotas. This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the announcement period. See "Additional Information" for information. Responsibilities Performs limited drafting and mapping work involving a variety of basic cartographic methods. Provides assistance to other staff members in creating, editing, and correcting digital data or map information. Provides assistance to more senior cartographers, technicians, and resource specialists in the development of digital data for off ice, state-wide and national natural resources geographic information systems. Maintains data bases for generating cartographic output; prepares or modifies maps and prepares finished copies of reports. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. For GS-4: You must possess six (6) months of general experience, and six (6) months of specialized experience at or equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GS-3 level. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area. Specialized experience is as indicated by the following examples: helping develop new transportation maps from ortho photos and notes; working from rough drawings, sketches, GIS data files, and verbal instructions to help prepare intricate, small-scale location exhibits and finished maps and plats. -OR- Education: Successful completion of two years of education above high school which includes at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences, e.g., physical geography or geodesy. Not more than 6 of the 12 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. For GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: developing new transportation maps from ortho photos and notes; working from rough drawings, sketches, GIS data files, and verbal instructions to prepare intricate, small-scale location exhibits and finished maps and plats. -OR- Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Education Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement. See Required Documents section for more information. Additional Information This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until May 30, 2025. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be October 15, 2024, 11:59 PM (EST) and then every month, until positions are filled or announcement closes. If the position(s) are no longer needed prior to the closing date, this announcement may be closed early. Eligible applications received prior to each cut-off date will be referred to offices requesting certificates during that period.
