Casting Engineering Supervisor

In this role, the Casting Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor will provide leadership for complex structural castings from the initial concept and development through product launch.  Your team will work with Product Development and Suppliers, to successfully develop and launch next-generation structural high pressure die castings. Successful candidates will have a proven record of leadership and product launch experience with the development and implementation of complex castings.

The Casting Manufacturing Engineering Supervisor will have the responsibility to lead and develop a team to ensure the highest quality and most efficient designs and processes are being used.  This process is a new to Ford manufacturing process and must combine both technical and leadership capabilities to drive success. Ideal candidates must navigate and drive change in a complex internal environment, challenging the status quo as we define an all-new way of manufacturing vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

15+ years prior experience with casting.Ability to demonstrate you can lead a team.Strong communication and interpersonal skills to present, persuade, and collaborate at all levels of the organization.Proficient level knowledge of high pressure die casting.Proficient level knowledge of die design, manufacturing and development processes.Competent knowledge of the secondary operations associated with castings, including, but not limited to trimming, fettling, deburring, and quality checks.Knowledge of alloys used for structural castings and melting operations and metal quality.Knowledge of the different die spray processes and different lubricant types used.  Candidate should have practical experience with setting and manipulation of die spray nozzles and set-up of spray process.Experience with the development of a shot curve and development of a process for a new casting.Understanding of MagmaSoft or other casting simulation software results.Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions in a fast paced, dynamic environment.Highly motivated self-starter capable of driving change and influencing engineering decisions, with or without authority.Experience performing casting manufacturing feasibility assessments.Foundry operational experience in casting manufacturing processes and process control.Proven track record of delivering major product launches in an automotive manufacturing facility.Ability to work in a production setting and aid in troubleshooting of equipment and processes. Possess practical problem-solving skill and the ability to address a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.Travel may be required from 25% - up to 80% of time.The lower end means working from home base (Dearborn) with minimum travel to Supplier/Vendors, Test facilities or out of state (of Michigan) Plants/Suppliers.The higher end of travel means supporting implementation/launch teams on site at the out of state (of Michigan) Plants/Suppliers.  This could require traveling from ~3 months up to ~ 1 ½ years working on-site at a Plant.  Per HR guidelines, when supporting out of state you are allowed to travel home every other weekend.

What you'll do

Lead a manufacturing engineering team to execute casting design reviews, risk mitigation, commissioning processes, and launch handoff with a Ford manufacturing facility.Utilize knowledge of quality processes and systems to meet stringent industry and customer requirements.Drive “Voice of Manufacturing” throughout product development lifecycle to ensure robust, feasible, and manufacturable casting assembly designs.Define and launch formal equipment and process standards for high pressure die cast tooling, casting equipment and post-processing cells.Deliver on-time and on-budget launches for upcoming Casting programs.Lead scope-of-work development and competitive bidding exercises for Unicasting manufacturing systems.Perform supervisory duties including but not limited to objective and goal development, development discussions and performance reviews.Assess employee competencies and support development and upskilling as necessary.  Mentor less experienced employees within and outside of the organization related to Casting Engineering.Support simultaneous engineering and feasibility engineering studies among product engineering, manufacturing engineering and supplier organizations.Support supplier selection evaluation process through manufacturing assessments and assist Purchasing in the evaluation, development, and selection of suppliers and subcontractors.Evaluate innovative and disruptive emerging processes and material technologies for potential application to Ford products.Support Product Engineering in the selection and specification of component materials and test procedures.
