Description

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian is a key member of the Pitts Theology Library’s technical services team, contributing to the internal consistency and quality control of the data and metadata of the Library’s discovery systems and supports the discoverability and accessibility of the Library’s resources. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian contributes to the processing of the Library’s new acquisitions by producing quality catalog records of bibliographically complex materials. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian works closely with members of the Access Services team in refining catalog records and with the Digital Asset Librarian and Technology Development Librarian in supporting the operation of the Library catalog and managing the Library’s growing digital collections. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian may also collaborate with colleagues at other campus libraries on metadata and cataloging projects.

 

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Original and complex cataloging of monographs, periodicals, and electronic resourcesEvaluating and maintaining catalog data to support resource discoveryAuthority work on controlled headings and vocabulariesManaging non-MARC metadata of digital resources in Library digital collectionsKeeping current with issues and trends in cataloging and metadata managementServing on library and campus committees as appropriateParticipating in relevant professional and scholarly associations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in library and information studies or equivalent experienceWorking knowledge of integrated library systems and the structure of online catalogsExperience with OCLC, MARC, and LCSHExperience with one or more non-MARC metadata schemas (Dublin Core, Bibliographic Ontology, MODS, etc.)Familiarity with content standards (e.g. RDA, etc.) and metadata systemsUnderstanding of existing and emerging descriptive principles and practicesGood organizational, time-management, and analytical skillsDemonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, within a collegial environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in theology, religious studies, or related disciplineExperience conducting academic researchKnowledge of standard and emerging cataloging principles and metadata schemesExperience with Ex Libris’s Alma ILS and Omeka/OmekaSExperience with data transformation tools (OpenRefine, Python, etc.)Familiarity with non-LC controlled vocabularies (Getty AAT, Homosaurus, etc.)Familiarity with maintenance and support of digital collectionsProficiency in a language other than English Emory Supports a Diverse and Inclusive Culture
