Catering/Laundry Assistant

Ellens Glen House is a 60-bed community hospital set in a beautiful grounds with free car parking and easy access for public transport.

As a Catering/Laundry Assistant at Sodexo in Ellens Glen House 72 Cranbree Avenue Edinburgh EH16 6FF, you will ensure the organisation provides Patients, Staff and Visitors with a high quality person-centred and safe catering service. Assisting with the preparation of food and contributing to the operation and cleanliness of kitchens, dining rooms, serveries and all associated equipment whilst supporting the production, portioning, distribution and service of the meals and snacks. 

The Catering/Laundry Assistant duties are defined by the cleaning specification and the allocated work schedule. Typically, the duties of a catering assistant will involve activities within one or more areas that can be completed within the timescale of the allocated shift pattern. Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team, delivering a high standard of catering services to Patients, Staff and Visitors and delivering a high standard of sewing, linen and laundry service in areas of high activity.

What you’ll do: 

Arrive on time with a clean Sodexo uniform and clock in. Maintain a clean, ironed, and tidy uniform while on duty. Adhere to high standards of personal hygiene in line with company policy and the Food Safety Act. Deliver high-quality, professional service to patients, staff, and visitors. Clean crockery, cutlery, utensils, containers, and small equipment manually and using machine washers. Clean floors, work surfaces, furnishings, and related equipment manually or with machines. Prepare and present sandwiches for service to patients, staff, and visitors. Assist chefs with basic food preparation. Prepare tea runs and deliver to wards and departments. Clean and prepare ward food trolleys for meal service. Deliver food to wards when required. Comply with food hygiene regulations, ensuring equipment is cleaned and departments remain clean. Adhere to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and complete necessary paperwork. Follow Health and Safety, manual handling, fire safety, and infection control regulations. Report faulty equipment, maintenance issues, and PPE requests to supervisors. Ensure building security, including locking doors and securing windows. Demonstrate duties to relief staff when covering duties. Store goods correctly and rotate stock. Participate in Performance and Development Reviews. Maintain confidentiality at all times. Support company values of quality, teamwork, care, compassion, dignity, respect, openness, honesty, and responsibility. Ensure all spillages are promptly cleaned up and warning signs are displayed.

Sewing:

Alter and repair staff uniforms to agreed standards. Mark patient clothing and flat goods. Repair curtains when necessary.

Linen:

Ensure linen stores are maintained at the correct quantities. Monitor linen stock levels and report any discrepancies. Clean and maintain exchange trolleys. Keep linen room clean and tidy and complete relevant paperwork.

Good communication and interpersonal skills Good customer care skills Basic literacy and numeracy Knowledge gained through corporate and local induction Completion of internal training programme Training for cash handling Manual Handling and Fire Awareness training Attainment of Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate within 6 months (one-day course) Working knowledge of procedures and equipment relevant to the role Ability to operate mechanical and electrical machinery safely and effectively Knowledge of Health & Safety Policies and work procedures Knowledge of Infection Control Policy, Guidelines, and Procedures
