Pay Rate: $93,400 – $124,500

Multiple factors, including Individual experience, skills and abilities will determine where an employee is ultimately placed in the pay range.

The Job You Will Perform: 

The Caustic Technical Assistant, will provide leadership and support to the area process manager (APM), operations maintenance coordinator (OMC), Front Line Leaders (FLLs), and operating crews to ensure continuity of the line operation, achieve department and area objectives, and facilitate sound business decisions.  This position is responsible for all operational activities covering the caustic area.  The key focus areas include safety, environmental compliance, daily production and performance (quality, acceptance, availability, and speed), system development, cost and efficiency improvements, reliability, and customer satisfaction. The position reports to the APM and is a building block to the APM position.

 

The Caustic Technical Assistant will support the FLL in daily troubleshooting efforts.  They are the safety promoter, process subject matter expert, and customer advocate.  The role is designed to provide the APM time to focus on longer term and continuous improvement efforts.

 

Expected to be a floor presence, to provide FLL coaching and teaching in the areas of process knowledge, equipment observation and troubleshooting techniques, informed decision process skills, and systematic thinking.  Help FLL and operating crews change and evolve as decision makers, and teach and expect team members to know the core department skills.  Not to be the one doing the work, but teaching the skills and setting expectations for FLLs and crews to take full control of the operations.

 

The driving force behind the day-to-day system focus, use, compliance and execution quality.  Day-to-day systems responsibility involves: centerlines, daily exception reports, control strategies, shift plans, short shut lists, TCCs, management by exception, job requests (work orders), measurement systems (Proficy, MACT, Reporting, RQ etc.), Basic Care, Operator rounds, LOTO improvements, and use of PI and ParcView.

 

Leadership and or ownership in improvement efforts as set forth by the APM (Kaizen and deliberate improvement teams, learning events, RCFA action items, 5S, etc). 

 

 

Responsibilities include:

Strive for optimal production and performance. Meet and maintain daily and monthly metrics at or above standards. Maintain and optimize a system of continuous improvement.  Incorporate centerline philosophies, management by exception, and operator driven reliability practices.  Provide training and development assistance for departmental employees. Caustic Plant performance improvements Improvement in reliability and troubleshooting Evaluate departmental safety and housekeeping practices.  Ensure expectations are met across the four operating shifts. Eliminate non-value added activities (waste) Make decisions based on the best-cost alternative, using knowledge and understanding of department fixed and variable cost budgets. Track operator rounds, basic care, etc compliance per shift (indirect responsibility for maintenance rounds such as lube and vibration routes) Root cause analysis. Provide summary of evidence, root cause identification, immediate action and long-term corrections to eliminate root cause. Drive center lining, daily compliance to target, shift plans, review daily exception reports, and use of checklists. Monitor operator performance tracking data for lost time, acceptance and slow back for accuracy and improvement. Drive Basic Care and reliability efforts with operations team.  Engage in MWS, and follow MWS practices. Fill in for APM as needed Build effective systems and materials such as operating procedures (SOPs), troubleshooting documents (TCCs) and other training materials Fulfill weekend duty team role for the department Check with Caustic operator for outstanding item from previous shift Railcar tally each day so there is an accurate count for chemical availability Make daily rounds in the Caustic Plant Review WO backlog for upcoming outages Monitor Mettler Toledo and Valmet status and troubleshoot as needed Review log sheets, lab sheets, railcar forms, and any other paperwork submitted as needed Ensure LOTOs meet mill information and format standards

Qualifications include:

Technical degree or comparable experience required Preferred 3-5 years leadership experience in manufacturing environment. Prior leadership or management experience in a manufacturing environment Strong written and verbal English skills. Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office

 

Key Challenges:

As this is a newly created role the successful candidate will have to be a self-starter and show value and results quickly by applying the right approach into data management with a large number of different stakeholders across the departments and mill. Drive execution of action plans through leadership by influence Position requires onsite presence (this is not a remote position) May have to work outside normal business hours in support of mill outages and/or upset conditions.
