Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County’s WIC program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals for eligible individuals. The WIC Nutritionist and Breastfeeding Program Supervisor delivers participant-centered nutrition and breastfeeding education to program participants. This position also promotes breastfeeding activities through the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program, supervises program staff, and ensures participant confidentiality and accurate documentation processes. This position reports directly to the Association Executive Director and receives WIC program oversight from Schenectady County WIC Coordinator. A Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years transferrable relevant experience may substitute for a Master’s degree. + Experience relevant to the role of the position. + Ability to help ensure diverse, equitable, and inclusive programs. + Ability to meet the occasional travel requirements associated with the position. Preferred Qualifications + One year experience providing education to breastfeeding individuals. Must attend a 95-hour lactation counselor course within the first year of employment or hold the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential. + Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) or IBCLC credentialed. + Supervisory experience or providing leadership and guidance to others. + Ability to speak, read and write proficiently in the Spanish language, or other non-English language as is spoken in the target community. Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions Program Responsibilities: Program Assessment and Development – 15% + Assist with program development efforts. + Assist in maintaining direct linkage with NYS WIC collaborators and other partners for program development guidance. + Assist in making programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes. Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research – 60% + Deliver nutrition education, to impact audiences through a variety of educational methods. + Serve as a subject matter resource; respond to questions. + Utilize evidence-based curricula and support materials to provide accurate, relevant nutrition education to participating families in accordance with WIC approved resources. + Foster acceptance of the WIC program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences. + Teach research-based education to targeted population on lifelong nutrition and healthy lifestyles including educating on the benefits of and providing educational support for exclusive breastfeeding. Address common breastfeeding concerns, may assist in breast pump issuance based on NYSDOH guidelines. + Utilize motivational interviewing strategies to provide participant-centered nutrition education (individual/family sessions or facilitated group discussions). This includes educating clients on WIC approved high nutrient foods that support optimal health outcomes and prevent chronic diseases. + Conduct dietetic screening and determine eligibility for WIC based on USDA/New York State Department of Health established nutrition and health parameters. + Work with participants to ensure WIC foods meet the nutritional needs and wants of the individual/family. Authorize, issue and reissue WIC food packages based on established USDA/New York State Department of Health guidelines. + Collaborate with community agencies and make connections for families to other Extension programs and community resources, serve as liaison for participants to other programs such as SNAP-ed, EFNEP, Healthy Families, Head Start, etc. + Represent CCE to the public, community leaders, government officials and Cornell University in a professional manner. + Help evaluate the program and make recommendations for improvements. Administrative Responsibilities: Direction and Management – 15% + Supervise program staff in accordance with applicable law, policies, and procedures. + Help ensure positive, team-based employee relations. + Monitor and schedule staff time to ensure program needs are met. + Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts. + May assist supervisor in planning programs, budgets, staffing, and communications and marketing efforts. Coordination and Operation – 5% + Train and orient staff. + Complete documentation as required by program and funders. + Implement, update, and/or close participant files with minimal nutritional educational needs or nutritional health concerns. + Attend team and staff meetings, report expenses timely, work with other staff and volunteers, general marketing of Extension programs. Professional Improvement – 5% + In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities. + Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned. Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions + Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment. + Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard. + Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
