The Co-op will support the API-Proteins group within the TDS organization, a part of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine. The TDS organization is responsible for the development of technology used in the large-scale manufacture of pharmaceutical products including active pharmaceutical ingredients, formulations, analytical methods, and devices to enable patient dosing of these pharmaceuticals.
This work will supply towards advancing our Cell Culture platform through detailed scale performance evaluation, the curiosity about - and mitigations to prevent – cell overgrowth, and the environmental impact of key cell culture raw materials.
Job Description & Key Responsibilities:
We are looking for highly motivated individual with training in cell biology, chemical engineering, and/or material sciences. The successful candidate will be embedded in a late-stage process development team within API Proteins and contribute by developing a novel reduced-scale model for raw material screening. The work will contribute towards the ability to efficiently and effectively screen raw materials for the evaluation of different lots prior to introduction in manufacturing campaigns. Specifically, the candidate will use their scientific knowledge and problem-solving ability to:
+ Develop a novel reduced-scale model for raw material screening
+ Analyze and interpret experimental results using analytical and statistical techniques. Actively participate in weekly meetings with internal and external collaborators.
+ Participate in technical discussions on design of experiments to fill gaps in knowledge.
+ Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documents according to required guidelines.
+ Provide a written and oral summary of their work and results at the conclusion of their internship
+ Provide other project support as needed.
Notes: The typical Intern term is from May 2025 – August 2025. The internship is a full-time, lab-based (i.e., on-site) roll.
**Qualifications**
Education:
+ Cell or molecular biology, biochemistry, chemical engineering, material sciences, and related majors are preferred.
+ Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of the internship assignment pursuing a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree, Master’s, or PhD degree or equivalent experience.
+ Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
+ Completion of Undergraduate Sophomore year at an accredited University is required.
Experience and Skills:
Required:
+ Coursework and/or working knowledge of cell culture processes
+ Ability to culture cells and maintain sterile technique is required
+ Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills
+ Students must be able to provide their own transportation to/from their work location.
+ Knowledge of or hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, bioreactors, bioreactor process development, and bioreactor data analysis.
+ Students must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require future sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H1-B status) now or in the future.
Preferred:
+ Previous co-op or internship experience is preferred.
+ Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or community service activities is desired
+ Students with basic laboratory skills and experience in research, experimental design & execution, technical writing, data analysis, and hands-on experience in chromatography and other relevant lab techniques is preferred.
