Cell Test Engineer

Ford Model E is responsible for developing the key technologies and capabilities – such as EV platforms, batteries, e-motors, inverters, charging and recycling – to create ground-up breakthrough electric vehicles. The minimum requirements we seek:  

B.S. or M.S. in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline Knowledge of lithium-ion cell chemistry, electrochemistry fundamentals, and safety protocols. Experience integrating off-the-shelf test equipment (power supplies, electronic loads, DAQs) in battery cell testing. Basic experience with battery test equipment scripting. (AVL LYNX or Arbin)  Proficiency with Python. Experience in test planning and management using tools like JAMA and JIRA. Ability to learn new concepts, propose experimental designs, and execute independently. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Enthusiasm for working cross-functionally in a dynamic environment as part of a high-performing team. A systematic approach to design and testing, with a drive for exceptional execution and continuous improvement. 3+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred experience/skills:  

Generated a dataset to support cell selection decisions. Hands-on experience in designing and assembling test assets. Tested multiple chemistries and form factors. Managed over 100 test channels. Transformed vehicle-level requirements into cell-level specifications.

What you’ll be able to do:  

Define and document test requirements for cell characterization, cycle life, abuse testing, and other validation procedures. Own cell-level test plans to characterize cell properties, essential for establishing cell specifications and control algorithms. Inspect test setups and analyze results to assess data quality, optimizing performance and reliability. Design cell fixtures to enhance testing capabilities, accuracy, and the extraction of representative, meaningful data. Collaborate with data engineers to create a seamless data pipeline for global requirement owners.  Drive the automation of the entire testing process, from test requests to the delivery of results reports.  Coordinate software development for test hardware control and DAQ with a partner test engineer or technician.  Present results to stakeholders and cell suppliers.
