Central Transport Aide

Summary:
Under general supervision and according to established procedures transports patients mail medical records laboratory specimens equipment and patient related materials to all areas within Hospital complex. Operates service elevators and maintains transport vehicles according to procedure.

 

Responsibilities:
Following established procedures transports patients by wheelchair or stretcher to areas within hospital complex as assigned by Dispatcher or according to needs of assigned area. Transfers patients to and from transport vehicles with direction and/or assistance from nursing personnel.



Regularly collects laboratory specimens medical records x-rays lab reports prescriptions and medications not governed by special controls and distributes them to appropriate areas; transports special or �start� materials as assigned.



Moves equipment on wheels and/or other moderately heavy equipment and materials such as hospital beds carts cardiac monitors and supplies.



Collects mail and interdepartmental correspondence from mailroom and other departments; and distributes them as assigned.



Rotates with other Aides in operating service elevators used for the transportation of patients equipment and supplies.



Collects and returns transport vehicles to appropriate areas; prepares same for patient use by changing linen replacing IV poles etc.



Maintains a written log of all assignments recording department items or patients transported and times of initiation and completion for presentation to supervisor at end of shift.

 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

The level of education normally attained in courses at secondary school levels.



The verbal skills needed to understand English instructions and the writing skills needed to maintain a daily log.



Visual acuity to check name bracelets envelopes etc. to ensure proper delivery.



Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.



EXPERIENCE:

Between two and four weeks on the job training.



WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Exposure to patient environment but takes standard precautions as directed by Nursing personnel when transporting barrier patients.



Subject to seasonal variations in temperature such as those encountered in �runs� to all areas of Hospital campus; occasional exposure to unpleasant weather conditions when transporting patients or materials to areas not accessible by tunnels.



Occasional exposure to unpleasant odors when transporting specimens.



Physical ability to stand and walk almost continuously and to lift carry and push patients and moderately heavy materials.



Visual acuity to check name bracelets envelopes etc. to ensure proper delivery.
