Cleveland-Cliffs – Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad in Negaunee, MI is seeking a CTC Operator. This role is responsible for directing and coordinating the safe movement of railroad traffic using radio communications in a specified territory. This position is a full-time, seasonal position as determined by seniority due to the shipping season on the Great Lakes – shipping seasons typically run the mid/end of March through mid-January.
The successful candidate for this job may be required (based on seniority), to transfer to an Ore Dock Laborer position located in Marquette, MI.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, procedures and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).Direct and coordinate railroad traffic, issue permits and authorities, monitor all rail movements and maintain computerized records of all activities.Know assigned territory and keep informed of changes in the physical characteristics.Maintain familiarity with scheduled trains, destinations, times of arrival and departures.Communicate with personnel on weather or any environmental conditions affecting train movement.Coordinate movement of trains according to operating plan and customer needs.Use multiple radio channels to monitor train and track movements.Remotely control track switches, traffic signals, applying and removing blocking devices.Report alleged violations of operating rules and any irregularities relating to the movement of trains.Plan in advance for smooth and efficient movement of priority trains, trains containing hazardous material or restricted shipments, meets/passes to avoid unnecessary delays.Coordinate track usage with Maintenance of Way Department personnel.Crew calling & any other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.Valid Driver’s License.Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Must practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries. Must utilize all protective equipment as assigned/required.Must have the ability and willingness to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.Excellent reading, communication and computer data entry skills.Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.Must have the ability to become and remain General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) qualified.Subject to CFR Part 219 Control of Alcohol & Drug Use and CFR Part 228 Covered Service Regulations.Must have the ability to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals to fractions to solve practical problems.Requires full, normal flexibility in all joints to perform work at/above shoulder level, ascending/descending stairways, ladders, freight cars, mechanical trapper unit, forward bending, squatting, twisting or any combination of these movements to perform general duties. Must have the ability to push/pull or lift, exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Must have the ability to perform continuous physical tasks for extended periods of time.Periodically, duties require fall protection harnessing.Must have the ability to stand/walk on level and uneven ground.May have regular exposure to extreme outside weather conditions, temperatures and elements with occasional exposure to fumes, noise, dust, dirt and vibrations. Must have the ability to work safely and efficiently at heights up to 80 feet.May be required to permanently fill other assignments or positions by appointment per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in all weather conditions. You will be required to work various shifts, overtime, holidays and weekends.All positions require pre-employment background verification, physical and pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.Must be available to work 365 days a year - days, nights, weekends and holidays.Preferred Qualifications
