The Certification Project Engineer, International will be a key position supporting validation and certification projects with international Civil Aviation Authorities. This position will focus on both strategic and tactical aspects of international projects and will be responsible for driving project execution through close coordination with the rest of the Airworthiness Engineering Team and other stakeholder departments. While the candidate will start as in individual contributor, coordinating across functional adjacencies, this position may grow to include direct reports, depending on the size and scope of the international projects.
ResponsibilitiesThe Certification Project Engineer, International will focus their time primarily on aircraft certification and airworthiness responsibilities and secondarily on supporting certification related activities for flight operations, pilots, mechanics, and safety management.
Driving the planning and execution of international certification or validation projectsServing as one of the key stakeholders for technical aspects of international certification and validation projects to which they are assigned, including leading strategic project scoping and planning initiativesRepresenting Joby and coordinating with international Civil Aviation Authorities, including leading key project meetings such as familiarization meetings, technical interface meetings, status reviews, road map planning, and project management reviewsWorking closely with DERs and engineering leads to develop applicant positions and compliance strategiesSupport the development of Applicant positions on strategic new policy development, airworthiness standards, means of compliance, Issue Papers, certification plans, and test plans for international projectsReviewing and managing requirements and advising company personnel in matters related to international certification and validation projects Authoring or Reviewing/Approving key certification documents to ensure Joby positions and plans are harmonized and risk balanced among Joby’s FAA and international certification projectsAuthoring and reviewing key certification data packages for regulatory authorities, including but not limited to white papers, briefing memos, applications, plans and reports, issue papers, compliance checklists, accomplishment summaries, manuals, Instructions for Continued Airworthiness, and similarProviding input to strategic planning and execution for other teams, such as engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations for international projectsWorking closely with other company departments, such as Product, Business Development, Flight Operations, Training, Maintenance, and Safety to ensure international certification or validation is harmonized with commercialization planningPerforming project planning and management activities, such as developing work breakdown structures, project schedules, integrating with other department schedules, resource planning, and budgetingReporting, tracking, and driving mitigation plans for project risks and issues, ensuring effective and timely communication to leadership Required Previous Type Certification or Validation project experience, Part 23 or 27 experience preferredPrevious project management or project engineering experienceDirect experience working with Civil Aviation AuthoritiesExperience developing applicant positions on complex compliance issuesAble to think creatively towards meeting certification requirements and corporate objectives 7+ years of experience in the civil aviation industry Effective at leading technical projects and coordinating with technical professionalsExcellent problem solving, communication, coordination, and technical writing skills Excellent presentation skills, able to communicate effectively with technical professionals, project managers, and executive leadership Strong organizational skills and highly detail-oriented Strong time and project management abilities, able to effectively work on multiple projects at onceBachelor of Science in Engineering or related technical discipline; Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering preferredProficient with Microsoft Office and Google Docs Proficient in EnglishAble to travel internationally, at least 30% of the time Desired Experience with multiple international Civil Aviation AuthoritiesExperience on multiple, whole-aircraft, certification projects including clean-sheet designsStrong knowledge of Part 23 Amendment 64 intent and the corollary role of industry consensus standardsStrong knowledge of 14 CFR Parts 23, 25, 27, and 29 regulations, policy, and guidance materialExperience with Continued Operational SafetyStrong knowledge of ICAO, EASA, or other international regulatory standards Strong knowledge of ASTM, RTCA, and SAE standardsBasic understanding of operations, pilot licensing, and mechanic licensing regulations and certification processes 10+ years of experience in the civil aviation industry Master’s degree or higherExperience using Dassault, Atlassian, and Polarian software tools Pilot experience or other experience with aircraft flight operationsProficiency in language(s) other than English EEOCompensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $141,900 - $236,400/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
