The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 17 bed unit providing care to children who’s ages range from newborn to 18 years old. The PICU provides care for cardiac and medical illnesses, and the nurses providing care in the unit usually care for one or two patients depending on the severity of the patients’ illness. Patient diagnoses include, but are not limited to, congenital cardiac defects, respiratory disease, trauma injuries, transplantation (liver, heart, kidney), neurosurgical, orthopedic, and general surgical interventions. Nurses routinely care for patients requiring vasoactive infusions, mechanical ventilation, intracranial and hemodynamic monitoring, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and ventricular assist devices (VAD). The interdisciplinary team, including the nurse, physician, respiratory therapist, physical/occupational therapist, and child life specialist, work closely with the patient and family to provide individualized care and support. Certified Nursing Assistants assist with caring for patients, including psychiatric and rehabilitative patients. They administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including feeding, bathing, shaving, changing clothing, trimming fingernails, bed-making, and assisting with ambulation. They perform direct and indirect patient care activities according to established policies and procedures, observe and report changes in patient conditions, and maintain a safe and clean environment. Position Compensation Range: $15.37 - $23.82 Hourly MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent Experience: No experience required Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required. **Certified to practice as a Nurse Aide in the Commonwealth of Virginia** **OR** **must meet one of the following criteria (required):** (1) Successful completion of the UVa PCT Education Program OR Successful completion of another PCT Education Program that has been approved by NPDS. (2) Documented proof of at least 1 year of recent (within past 2 years) experience in a similar PCT role from an outside institution. Candidate must successfully complete a written exam and must successfully demonstrate clinical skills during 6 month probationary period. (3) Passage of a nationally recognized and accredited PCT Certification exam. (Example - National Healthcareer Association - C-PCT). Present Certificate as verification. **OR** **must meet one of the following criteria (required):** (1) Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Medical/Surgical Clinical Experience and Didactic are exempt from the Certified Nurse Aide requirement.
