Certified Nursing Assistant - Pediatrics

Job Purpose: The Certified Nursing Assistant/Child Care Teacher for the Pediatric Skilled Nursing functions as a member of the patient care team performing basic tasks within the scope of certification and demonstrated competence. Performs nursing tasks delegated by a registered nurse under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or other licensed personnel. The PSN CNA/Child Care Teacher is responsible for successful individualized educational programs for students with special health care needs, including assessment, curriculum implementation, physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth, as well as effective program communication.

Communicates effectively with clients and families and is sensitive to their emotional, social, psychological, cultural, ethnic, religious, or other values and beliefs. Provides basic nursing skills within level of competency and delegated by a licensed nurse. (i.e. hygiene, physical cares, intake/nutrition, ambulation/exercise, maintaining infection control and safety, assists with tracheostomy and GT stoma cares) GT feed administration and light meal preparation.  Assists other staff with client activities, i.e. music, play therapy, etc. Works collaboratively to meet all aspects of developmental and academic needs of the child.  Performs light housekeeping tasks, i.e. toy cleaning, laundry, dishwashing, etc. Accompanies the children on field trips and outdoor play as needed. Performs basic personal care tasks such as bathing and mouth care, grooming, dressing, toileting, eating assistance, and skin care. Provides basic restorative services including the application of assistive devices for ambulation, range of motion exercises, proper turning and positioning in bed and chair, bowel and bladder training and use and care of prosthetic devices. Cleans equipment and supplies after use and reports any deficiencies or unsafe equipment to the RN in charge or appropriate personnel immediately. Assures confidentiality of all patient/family information. Develops and organizes daily program plans, curriculum, and materials, ensuring student’s needs are being met throughout the day based on the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Understands and communicates the needs of children, their families, and the relationship between these needs. Direct individual and small group instruction to implement child-based educational and developmental goals. Oversees developmental assessment of individual children and regularly monitor educational progress. Assists in the orientation of parents to the PSN community and communicate with parents and child’s support team on a regular basis. Plans and provides peer training and support for center staff regarding established goals. Provides assistance to student’s personal hygiene needs as necessary. Participates in department planning activities related to children’s medical and educational needs. Guides others in the classroom with DCF regulations and rules. Performs special assignments and or projects as assigned.

 

 

Required Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure and Credentials: (Where appropriate, education and/or experience may be substituted)

 

Minimum Required Education: Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent

 

Minimum Required Experience:  Experience with pediatric special needs clients is preferred.

 

Required License – Certification – Registration:

Current WI Nursing Assistant License, without limitations that are incompatible with duties, responsibilities, supervision or practice setting. Must either be CPR certified at the start of employment or complete CPR certification course within 30 days of the start of employment. Must maintain active CPR certification through periodic renewal as dictated by the certification. Must successfully complete required competencies within first 90 days of employment: Suctioning :  (oral, nasal) Assisting with tracheostomy cares Vital signs:  (axillary temperatures, pulse oximeter) with knowledge of pediatric parameters Child development Skin Health Membership with the Registry with minimum of level 3 certification within 90 days of hire.

 

 

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities:

Has successfully completed a certified nursing assistant, home health aide, or hospice aid instructional program and competency evaluation program Ability to render care to patients by following the RN instruction (oral and written) in care giving according to an established plan of care for the patient. Demonstrate sensitivity and the ability to work with a diverse population of children with special health care needs. Understand typical and atypical child development from birth through 21 years of age. Understands basic personal care tasks such as bathing and mouth care, grooming, dressing, toileting, eating assistance, and skin care. Willing to take courses to gain levels of the Registry/maintain certification and compliance with DCF regulations. Ability to successfully deal with change and stressful situations. Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity, and Work Conditions:

 

Physical Requirements: Must frequently be able to move, transport, position, push/pull and/ or lift objects or equipment weighing at least 50 pounds a distance of 450 feet. Must be able to safely push a person in a wheelchair ramp in various weather conditions.  Must be able to transfer a person from a wheelchair to the toilet, chair, or van seat/car with use of a gait belt and/or manual or power Hoyer lift.

This position is responsible for the supervision and safety of clients in a multi discipline care setting.  As such, this position must be able to observe client activities, detect areas of danger, and distinguish when clients who are non-communicative are in need of personal cares, and converse clearly with clients and staff on a frequent basis.

 

Visual Acuity: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal.

 

Working Conditions: PSN operates from 6am to 6pm, 6 days per week and requires flexibility to cover the needs of the business as it evolves and changes.
