Certified Pharmacy Technician III

Job Overview:

A hospital Pharmacy Technician III is a healthcare professional who plays an integral role in pharmacy operations. Under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the pharmacy technician assists in the distribution of medications to patients in the hospital (inpatient and outpatient units, emergency room, and operating room). This includes selecting, counting, compounding, packing, labeling, and delivering medications. Additionally, a Pharmacy Technician III is responsible for the preparation of sterile compounds, including chemotherapy and hazardous substances, and for maintaining the sterile environment in the IV Room. Proficiency in accessing and viewing electronic health records and pharmacy automated systems is required. Employees will work in multiple areas of the pharmacy to maintain competency and broaden their skills.

Work Hours:

Full-time, 80 hours bi-weekly Weekends and Holiday rotation

Job Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED Active National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) is required (approved certifications include Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PCTB) and ExCPT Certification by the National Healthcareer Association) Active registration with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician Must be able to compound sterile products and maintain a sterile environment Up to 1 year of technical pharmacy experience as a Pharmacy Technician II is required to be eligible for the Pharmacy Technician III position

Job Responsibilities:

Assist the pharmacist in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of compounded sterile products, including chemotherapy and hazardous medications, while following current guidelines and policies (USP 797, USP 800, ASHP, NIOSH, and Board of Pharmacy laws and regulations). Perform hand hygiene, garbing, and cleaning and disinfecting of the hoods and room according to policy, and keep accurate cleaning logs. Prioritize IV medication production and dispose of IV and chemotherapy/hazardous waste appropriately. Adhere to all safety requirements when handling, preparing, labeling, and disposing of chemotherapy and hazardous medications. Assist in non-sterile medication preparation by selecting, counting, compounding, packaging, scanning, labeling, filling, and delivering medications per department guidelines. Operate and maintain the Automated Dispensing Machine, including loading, refilling, unloading, and resolving discrepancies. Accurately and efficiently transport medications from the pharmacy to areas outside of the pharmacy (e.g., tubing, cart delivery, IV run, STAT). Maintain accurate controlled substances (CII-CV) inventory and review and maintain controlled substance records. Report unresolved controlled discrepancies to a supervisor immediately. Optimize workflow by efficiently and accurately completing job duties and prioritizing workload. Use good technical and procedural judgment and assist with other duties as necessary for efficient pharmacy operations. Show initiative and flexibility in carrying out day-to-day tasks. Utilize appropriate and logical problem-solving techniques and communicate critical issues to appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Appropriately use pharmacy technology, follow department standards of work, policies, and workflows, and maintain pharmacy automation (e.g., changing consumables, cleaning). Identify, troubleshoot, and report pharmacy automation issues. Access patient information, process in-basket Rx messages, and print labels in the Electronic Health Record. Respond politely and professionally to pharmacist, nursing, physician, patient, or other requests via telephone, in writing, or in person. Manage, triage, and ensure timely follow-up of all requests. Assist in the training of new employees.

Other Job-Related Information:

Must be a Pharmacy Technician II to be eligible for the Pharmacy Technician III position. Required to train in compounding sterile hazardous medications and be available to compound hazardous medications when needed. Will work with hazardous and toxic substances.
