PRN - Thursdays **POSITION SUMMARY** A Certified Surgical Technologist- First Assistant ( CST-FA) performs under direct guidance and supervision of the primary operative surgeon, assists in the operative care of the patients and performs duties as assigned. Surgical Asst FA possess knowledge of aseptic technique and applies this while participating in the surgical procedure, coordination of care of instruments, equipment and supplies. Assists in the provisions of care to the patient. Performs functions of a surgical assistant under the direct supervision of the physician. **Required Minimum Education:** 2 Year/ Associates Degree **Specialty/Major:** CST-FA **Preferred Education:** 4 year/ Bachelors Degree **Licensure/Certification** **Required:** Current certified Surgical Technologist. Graduate of approved Surgical Assistant program. First Assistant Certification. Maintain CPR certification. **Minimum Years and Type of Experience:** Required experience performing as a CST-FA. Employee must be fully familiar with surgeons’ preferences and department policies and procedures. **Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities** **Required:** The position requires the incumbent to demonstrate proficiency in clinical skills for patients. Knowledge of basic science, anatomy, physiology, asepsis and sterile techniques and operating room techniques as required via CST-FA certification. Employee must be able to accurately and efficiently set up operating room supplies and equipment and assist with new equipment. **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** + Assessment: Demonstrates proficient assessment skills, including the physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, functional and pain/comfort level. Completes initial assessment and reassessments within established time frames. Uses assessment data to prioritize patient needs. Completes patient assessment form and notifies appropriate department of identified triggers. Notifies appropriate departments of pertinent patient information (i.e., allergies, weight, isolation, and oxygen use). Provides clear, timely, concise and legible documentation of pertinent patient information. Provides reassessment documentation which includes changes in patient's condition and response to treatment. Assesses nursing care administered by those under their direct supervision. Assesses patient for signs of abuse/neglect. + Planning: Uses assessment data to develop a prioritized plan of care in collaboration with other disciplines, the patient and family/significant other. Changes plan of care according to reassessment and changes inpatient's condition. Establishes realistic patient goals in collaboration with patient and family/significant other. Documents prioritized care needs on appropriate forms. Documents plan of care within established timeframes. Begins discharge planning on admission incorporating a plan to meet the educational needs of the patient and family/significant other. + Implementation: Delegates, assigns, directs, and supervises aspects of care to members of patient care team according to job descriptions, level of competency and Ohio Nurse Practice Act. Provides patient education directed to meet the continuing needs of the patient and family/significant others. + Evaluation: Evaluates patient progress toward outcomes daily and revises the plan of care based upon patient response to nursing interventions. Documents effectiveness of care/interventions. + Miscellaneous: Protects patient rights of confidentiality and privacy at all times. Demonstrates knowledge of role in emergency situations. Attends mandatory meetings, in-services, and continuing education and participates in committees as opportunities occur. Promotes unity, collegiality by promoting supportive behavior and displaying a positive attitude. Promotes and follows the written hospital policies, procedures and standards. Participates in performance improvement projects of nursing unit as assigned by the Manager. Keeps abreast of changes within the hospital and the nursing unit by reading policies, procedures, memos, and communication book and attending required number of unit meetings. + Assists in training and orientating new staff members. + Implements a high intraoperative standard of quality, infection control, and patient safety practices. + Assists the surgeon with the technical aspects of the operative procedure, while also applying advanced knowledge of patient anatomy, physiology, and operative procedures.
