Summary:

The Certified SPD Tech assists with cleaning and care of instruments and surgical trays. Prepares trays for sterilization. Assists in general departmental housekeeping tasks, maintains specialty carts. Assures that biological and chemical monitors are completed as required. Operates steam, sterrad, gas, and steris sterilizers. Operates washers and ultrasonic machine. Maintains required logkeeping records. Works closely with OR staff in preparing and assisting the OR as needed, fostering good communication skills and a positive work environment. Assists other nursing units, clinics adn medical offices with the decontamination, cleaning and sterilization of their items. Expected to work efficiently, function independently and maintain a positive attitude. Department open from 6 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.

 

Experience/Education Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalentPrevious experience helpful but not necessary4-6 week orientation period within department

License or Certification Requirements:

SPD Tech Certification Required

 

 

Responsibilities:
Able to clean and test instrumentation for functionalityAble to distinguish between clean and dirty areas of the department and adheres to RMC policy for proper traffic control and dress code through the departmentAttempts to be helpful to any staff member or vendor when they may ask for your servicesCall as assignedChecking in storeroom supplies & outside (special order) supplies.Checking for outdated supplies and reprocessing as necessary.Checks on nursing units for instrumentation and return to SPD as necessary Cleaning and restocking of specialty carts.Documenting when carts or special instruments are issued to nursing units.Communicates with OR regarding special instrument cleaning.Knowledge of all OR instruments and proper decontamination of instrumentsDocumentation and maintenance of all records pertinent to sterilizers, i.e. biological and chemical indicators, and load tally sheets.Follows RMC policy on Personal Protection Equipment while working in decontaminationInspects and disassembles instruments to ensure proper cleaning and disinfectionKnowledge of operation of steam, gas sterilizers and SterradLoads and operates the washers properly. Blood and Body Fluids: Sharps, contaminated linen, contaminated instruments
TB or Airborne Pathogens: Very limited. Possible during unit rounds.

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):
Speech: Answer phones communicate with peers, OR staff, nursing units or other hospital departments.
Vision: To be able to wrap packages, monitor sterilizers and indicators for proper cycle completion. Accurately dispense items.
Smell: To detect hazardous odors.
Hearing: Phone, doorbell, alarms on sterilizers.
Touch: To distinguish between hot and cold.
